Secretary of County Farm Bureau Calls on Farmers Here to Change This Portion of Nation’s Economy
ORANGE — Executive Secretary C.J. Marks of the Orange County Farm Bureau today called upon the county’s farmers to “revise our own portion of the nation’s economy and social order, to make it work right and make it morally straight.”
He likened it as a contribution of respect to the nation’s war dead.
He reminded, in a powerful editorial in the Farm Bureau News, monthly of the organization, that those war veterans who have returned or will be back will receive payments and concessions available to all service men.
But, he added, “we all feel inadequate in trying to pay for lives lost in our common cause.”
One way to do it, he insisted, is to “pay for those sacrifices by a force of ideas and action which will bring about a stronger nation, stronger physically and morally.”
Farmers can do it, he explained, by saying whether they think the farm program has wandered away” from the principles which kept this nation strong, and he called for response to widely-circulated questionnaires on whether farmers want continued subsidies and controls.
“When all the farmers . . . take part constructively . . . the results are greater than just the total of all the answers. There has been generated a new power that gives real meaning, substance, enthusiasm and force to the combined answer.”

Bartlett Pears Still Are on Plentiful List
For October Eating and Canning
BARTLETT PEARS ARE ON PLENTIFUL LIST
Fresh Bartlett pears are still plentiful and will be well past the middle of October, it was reported this week. Due to the lateness of the season in the West Coast states, the Pear season is prolonged past that of recent years. Bartlett pears are usually on the wane a few weeks earlier.
Homemakers who missed Bartlett pears for canning or freezing earlier in the season will be pleased to know that they may still be able to get them in quantities with excellent quality. The warm weather of the summer across the nation was not conducive to canning earlier, so pears come at a convenient time when homemakers have returned from summer vacations, children are back in school, and there is more time to devote to homemaking.
From East to West and from North to South, fresh Bartlett pears fit into Indian summer menus. A fresh pear salad is a perfect accompaniment to the fried chicken of the South or with a beef stew of the Midwest. Unpeeled and cored pear halves, chilled and crisp, bathed in French dressing are always a favorite or they may be combined with other fruits or salad greens for a tossed salad.
A pear-cheesy tray is as popular for patio meals of California as it is for sophisticated service of New York. Juloy Bartlett pears from
the three West Coast states are ready to combine with cheeses of Oregon, Wisconsin, Missouri and other Cheese producing states for National Cheese Month.
Pears are just as much a part of a spaghetti dinner of the South-west as with a seafood dinner of Washington State or of New England. Broiled or baked they become an excellent meat accompaniment. Top them with mayonnaise when they are almost done and brown them quickly under the broiler and they take the place of a salad and meat accompaniment in the meal.
