BULLETIN Thursday, October 6, 1953 MARE ISLAND NAVY YARD BLACK—Smoke buoys from flaming tugboat pier at Mare Island Navy Yard, Vallejo, Calif., where one man was drowned and 14 injured fighting the $500,000 blaze. The fire was fought by 1000 sailors and Marines from the shipyard, as well as the civilian fire department there. Also in London, Sir Edmund Hillary, conqueror of Mt. Everest, said the next time he scales a mountain he plans to take his knitting along. Hillary said that his mountain climbing team has decided to take up a hobby, such as knitting, on its next expedition to "counteract boredom." Bruce Paget, 14, of Winnipeg, MN, who was chased away from a knothole in the Winnipeg Stadium fence by four policemen during a football game complained to local newspapers that there isn't any justice. "Later I saw the same four policemen looking through the same knothole," he complained. Way over in Karachi, Pakistan, Prime Minister Mohammed All's crackdown on men who have been annoying Pakistani women netted 61 "lady killers" in one day, police reported. The men were caught "whistling at girls or winking or twirling their mustaches or purposely rubbing their shoulders against women trying to board buses. All were given two to three month prison sentences. Closer to home, Ted Swang, 20, a Fresno State College student from Thailand, has decided to make life a little easier for his teacher. Swang stopped signing his real name, Surasak Swang-vudhidtham. In Rosario, Argentina, Judge Juan Largula has ordered a pretty ROLLING IN — Perspiring Guido Caroli relaxes upon crossing the finish line of the 20,000-meter "American Race" in Venice, Italy. Dobbin limped to the stable but the truck, which suffered a fractured fan and a smashed radiator, had to be towed away. Here is one final note on the World Series. The Brooklyn Eagle sadly proclaimed the defeat of the Dodgers in the World Series by printing a solid black streamer across its front page.
