FJC Offers Adult Night Classes in Precision Grinding to Aid Industry
To help industry in Northern Orange County recruit much needed personnel in maintenance and in precision grinding positions, Fullerton Junior College adult night schools are offering classes in these subjects taught by experts from local industry.
Machinery and Equipment Maintenance and Precision Grinding are highly specialized trades requiring the development of skills which demand high pay in industry.
The machinery and equipment maintenance course is being taught Monday and Wednesday, 7 to 9 p.m. Instructor is A.A. Zurbruegg, a tool engineer at Northrop Aircraft, Inc. He has had 17 years industrial experience.
The course will include such subjects as maintenance and repair of electric controls, lines, and machinery; shop layout for safety and cleanliness, reading of construction blue prints, sheet metal maintenance, machine repair, welding, carpentry, painting, plumbing, heating, ventilating and others.
The precision grinding class will be taught Mondays and Wednesday, 7 to 9 p.m. Bartley S. Mumma, Supervisor of Grinding at Kwikset Locks, Inc., and a veteran of many years in tool and die grinding, will teach the course.
The classes will cover the selection of proper wheels and the use of diamonds, planning work and operations of the precision grinder including blue print reading and shop sketches. The use of sine bars, grinding vices, optical comparators, and other precision equipment will be taught along with the different types of grinders and their uses.
Grinding is a precise trade requiring skill of the type found in good tool and die makers.
Adults—whether employed in industry or not—who wish to enter one of the classes may register at the junior college on the night the class meets. There is a registration fee of $1.

Schools Join Forces For Study of Smog
LOS ANGELES (UP)—Three Los Angeles medical schools and the Los Angeles County Medical Assn. are joining forces for a large-scale smog study program. Association President Dr. Paul D. Foster said today.
Foster said the participating medical schools include the University of Southern California, the University of California at Los Angeles and the College of Medical Evangelists. He said the California Institute of Technology would be asked to lend aid to the project.
"This study will seek to determine the exact extent of damage smog does to human tissue, the exact contaminants and concentrations which cause that damage, and just what their sources are," he said.
Auto Dealer Killed Crossing Coast Highway
LAGUNA BEACH—Struck down by an automobile as he attempted to cross busy Coast Highway, Harry Green, 59, an automobile dealer was killed Tuesday night.
Green was crossing at Brooks Street at the south edge of town when he was hit by a car driven by James Howard Mills, 38, a sign painter who lives in Venice, Police
The eight guest-passengers aboard the yacht "Spiritus" out of Nassau, Bahamas, are gripped by terror when a shot is fired in the night and that host and owner of the craft, wealthy eccentric Darius Opdyke is reported missing from the vessel. Sardonic old Jonas, the ship's captain, assembles his passengers in the cabin, advising them that Opdyke had a promotion of meeting with foul play on the voyage, and had consequently left his will in Jonas' keeping. The document depicts that the Spiritus continue long courses toward South America for seven days, by the end of which period Mr. Opdyke had believed his Killer would be revealed. Eagle-eyed Stewartdare Macbeth is placed in charge of the ship and she watches over them like a jailor. The strain of all this causes sensitive little Gay Walton, movie actress, to become hysterical and Dr. Reuben Randolph, a psychiatrist, co-founded elderly Ledy Larry Mraine, and Larry Redding, a lawyer, each admit having quarreled with their host prior to his disappearance. Virginia Peterson only American girl aboard the yacht, had seen some seagulls thing overboard after the shot had been fired, but she very wisely keeps this information to herself.
CHAPTER ELEVEN
UP ON THE veranda dock, Brown, still in evening clothes, his dark face purple, his hair on end, was panting in Larry's embrace, and Robert had put a jujitsu turstur on Dr. Randolph's plied white linen jacket into some sort of order.
"I was making necessary investigations, dictated by my experience," he announced to us.
"Then I was making investigations too." Randolph countered promptly. Robert had handed him his dressing gown, and the shorts were velled.
Brown gave him a nasty look. "Which is why you went directly to the safe and began to fiddle with the knob?"
"What sort of ring-around-the-eyes is this?" inquired the captain in disgust. "It's as plain as the nose on my face that ye was both after the letter in the safe. That's a hard boot to crack, so it isn't likely you got it. Still, I'll give you a going over to make sure."
He ran his hands expertly through Brown's pockets, around his waistline, and down his trousers. The big lawyer flushed, but offered no objection. Then he turned out the pockets of the doctor's dressing gown—with no result. He seemed satisfied.
"I guess that's that. You didn't throw it out of the ports, for they give on the deck."
is placing all of us in grave ger—himself most of all."
Beyond turning down the arcs of his mouth in a hoop, did not bother to answer.
The ship's carpenter no rived with his equipment, and captain went around him pull down the shutters from inside and bolt the porta. Wit had locked the door and dived into his pocket, he owed the iron bar screwed into across it. In a silence which volumes, he waited to see t finished.
"You can bolt us out," my art said, "but can you bolt an?"
Jonas threw him a sharp on a clean white cotton dress rubber-soled sandals. I told onica-colored scarf, which said matched my eyes, around neck, and thought that at looked healthy, which was than could be said for some other women. Then I went

CHAPTER ELEVEN
UP ON THE veranda deck, Brown, still in evening clothes, his dark face purple, his hair on end, was panting in Larry's embrace, and Robert had put a juilts twist on Dr. Randolph's arm. The doctor had lost the dressing gown in which he had been draped since the night before, exposing a wide expanse of hairless chest, and rather astonishing purple shorts. The start of a beautiful mouse was puffing up on his left eye. The Captain stood between the combatants, and he was plenty mad.
"Speak up now," he was saying, "or I will put ye both in irons. And don't think I'd stop at doing it, either."
For a minute both men were obstinately silent, but then Randolph spoke up.
"As I was walking past the owner's cabin, I heard a noise and decided to look into it."
Brown gave a snort, which made him more like a hippopotamus than ever. "The hell you did! In the first place, I was not making a noise, and in the second place, you opened the door like a thief, peered around the room, and did not come in until you thought it was empty. I had a good view of you, because I heard you coming and stepped into the shower."
"I object to the word theft," Randolph said hotly.
"I didn't say you were one. I said you moved like one." Brown's tone was anything but conciliatory.
The captain cut them short. "I've had enough of this. You'd no business there, either one of you. Todd, tell the carpenter to bring up an iron bar and some screw bolts. I'll shunt the place up right. Had ought to have done it sooner, seeing that Nosey Parkers are on board. Now, I'd like to hear what you was after—and don't think I'll be surprised."
Brown had disengaged himself from Larry, who looked bewildered as usual, and smoothed his crum-
noise on my face that ye was both after the letter in the safe. That's a hard box to crack, so it isn't likely you got it.
"It could be in the cabin," Robert offered mildly.
Jonas threw him a sharp look in which there was no gratitude, but he led off to a search of the cabin, and of the shower, hurrying it along as much as possible. Nothing was found, but by the time the hunting was finished, Brown had resumed, not without an effort, his air of manly frankness.
"Tm glad to have you see that I did not obtain anything, I am quite willing to admit that I hoped toplainly we should all like to have possible if it could help to clear things up, could put a stop to this force of cruising around and waiting. Of course I had meant to make it public if I found it. Im my opinion, the captain should open the safe for us now."
Jonas cracked apart the fissure of his grin. "And void the will! I'm not that dumb, Mr. Brown, nor you're not neither. If there's secrets about all of ye in that letter, they'll come out on the seventh day, and not before."
By this time Randolph also had recovered his self-possession, and had had time to think out another stratagem. "As a psychiatrist, captain, I must warn you that you are taking a grave risk when you put us under such a strain. There are people on board who might crack, and some very regrettable things could happen."
"That don't worry me much," the captain declared.
Robert spoke up with a gentle detachment which was almost apologetic (and look out for him when he is disarming), "Would you care to tell us, doctor, whom you have in mind?"
"That would be unprofessional,' Randolph answered sternly. 'But I can assure you that the captain
There was no one in the wroom, nor up on the prom deck, in the salon, or in the T ship. The ship was so deserted that might have been the only board. The sense of privacy of freedom from the complex of the cruise might have pleased if I had not been to gry to enjoy it. But I was.
I started down to B deck some vague idea of raiding galley. I have never been gine that could run without.
The stairs from A to B were in a circular well area pillar, and I suppose my soiled shoes made no noise; before I rounded the last corner something which froze in my tracks. It was Cas voice, low, venomous, skimming cream.
"So I was in the doctor's office that all you have to tell me."
A man answered in an ungulshable mumble, but I pretty sure that it was Todd.
"Do you think I am fooled to give you a hundred Dollar asked."
This time I heard Todd o'You'd better, Mrs. Redding.

NEW YORK (UP)—George Girard’s trumpet solo on the Basin Street Six’s Mercury Recording of “Melancholy Rhapsody” should rank one of the outstanding individual performances of 1953.
Girard’s trumpet is reminiscent of Bunny Berigan’s in many passages. It is persuasive and authoritative without being ostentatious.
This is truly a fine record, because on the flipover the Basin Street Six team up for an authentic New Orleans version of the old Dixieland standby, “Panama.”
Kid Ory, who never has lost his New Orleans touch on his sojourns to California, has added a superb recording of “Dixieland One Step” to Good Time Jazz’s library of Crescent City classics. The combo plays “Ory’s Trombone” on the other side, but who cares?
If you’re grieving over the demise of bebop, you’ll be happy to know that M-G-M has resurrected the body with a 12-inch Long Play waxing of the memorable 1946 Woody Herman concept at Carnegie Hall.
Always Ellington
Herman’s ubiquitous clarinet gets a rest, with most of the sinuous solos going to the late Sunny Berman. Red Norvegia are evident, too, in the Woodchopper including the now famous “Wild Root.”
During the dismal period while Dixieland was in a limbo and bop was waiting to be born, there was always Duke Ellington, one of the greatest artists of the 20th century, to make mood music.
The Duke is still very much around, and his latest Columbia LP, “Premiered by Ellington,” is a masterful assembly of eight numbers which have stood up through the years, including “Stardust,” “Stormy Weather,” “Cocktails for Two” and “Flamingo.”
Dean Martin’s song from his latest movie is an amusing one. It’s called “That’s Amore” and Dean has recorded the merry tune for Capitol. Same goes for Blue Barron on an M-G-M label.
George Shaw’s vocal on “Rage to Riches” (Decea) gets expert Latin-style backing from Jimmie Leyden’s orchestra. “Let Me Go, Devil,” on the flippo is a warning to all.
Hillibilly hit of the week: “Catfish Boogie” by Tennessee Ernie on a Capitol single.
