Chief Justice Warren—
The people of California certainly extend to former Governor, and now United States Chief Justice, Earl Warren their thanks for his past achievements here and their fervent good wishes for the years ahead in his new post.
Few men in the State's history have enjoyed the popularity and esteem of this man. And his appointment by President Eisenhower gives proof that his stature has gained recognition throughout the Nation.
The new Chief Justice has come up the ladder step by step, first as a district attorney, then as Attorney General, then Governor. In each position he demonstrated integrity, ability and a sensible approach to problems. His promotion to one of the highest posts in Orange County is in political terminology rating tops. Few men in the State's history have enjoyed the popularity and esteem of this man. And his appointment by President Eisenhower gives proof that his stature has gained recognition throughout the Nation.
The new Chief Justice has come up the ladder step by step, first as a district attorney, then as Attorney General; then Governor. In each position he demonstrated integrity, ability and a sensible approach to problems. His promotion to one of the highest posts in the land is not only a personal accolade from the President, but, in a degree, is indicative of the rising importance of the West.
Mr. Warren is the first man from California ever to be Chief Justice. Yet, now he is one of a trio of Californians who hold key spots in the Nation's Capital. The other two, of course, are Vice President Richard Nixon, and Senate Majority Leader William Knowland.
It seems fitting that our State which has led the way in population growth, in farm output and methods in the development of the world's largest bank, in home building and the creation of new jobs, should now gain its rightful recognition in the field of government.
We feel confident that Earl Warren in his new position will justify the faith that both President Eisenhower and the people of California have in him.
It's Up to You!
The support of the United Crusade and Community Chest drives cannot safely be left to "George." The success of such campaigns require the wholehearted backing of the community both in soliciting and in contributing the necessary dollars to assure the quota needed.
If the various agencies which provide for the welfare of our youth, our needy, our servicemen, and the agencies which seek to combat human suffering in its many forms are to have enough to carry on their vital work they must have YOUR support.
This means something more than giving a dollar or two and then sitting back with a satisfied air. It means digging down deep in your pocket and coming up with all you can spare—and a little more besides. Every cent you give is an investment in a better community and it pays rich dividends in higher standards and happier lives.
So, give and give generously for a grand cause. It's a grand opportunity!

"THE GODS, TOO, AGE . . . !"
This have we found: that, in the days of youth,
Men bind themselves to gods whose faces turn
Upon strange courses where falsehood is truth—
Or truth is falsehood: punishment is stern
On whomsoever thinks to turn aside,
Or sacrifice on other altars burn!
Strict are Youth's gods—and rigid in their pride;
Prompt their reprisal for each least mistake—
And swift the blows they feel are justified!
Yet passing years each tend to ease the ache
Of custom's manacles which chafe and bind—
(The fetters our best efforts failed to break)—
Youth ages—and then is amazed to find—
Its gods, too, age—and likewise grow more kind!

British trade with Communist China continues to be a sore spot in Anglo-American relations.
The subject recently was reopened by Sen. William F. Knowland (R-Galif.) who has just returned from a globe circling fact finding tour, and again by the liberal Manchester Guardian, one of England's most respected newspapers.
The Manchester editorial was a friendly one, a refreshing change after the "hate America" theme of the British Labor Party conference, but it challenged charges that British trade with China is a moral outrage."
Charges U. S. Trade
"We wonder at the hypocrisy which ignores American trade with China, which last year was almost as great as ours," the editorial said.
Here are some figures as supplied by the United States Commerce Department and the British Board of Trade.
In 1952, the United States reported no exports to Red China, but its imports from Red China totaled $27,725,000.
In the same year, Britain exported $10,774,167 in goods to China during the first 11 months while imports in the same totaled $8,032,091.
For 1952, then, total U.S. trade with Red China was greater than Britain's.
In 1958, the trend had reversed.
British Trade Increase Through July of this year, exports to Red China totaled $10,175,000 and imports $14,834,000.
The U. S. reported no imports dropped to $44 million without attempting to either position it may be out that figures are common and may be misleading.

The Publisher Comments
Orange County may be termed a "Cow County" in political terminology but in importance this area is eating tops. Especially since our present Governor, Goodie" Knight, and the next elected Governor of the State of California, selected Anaheim to make his first major policy talk.
Orange County is one of Governor Knight's strongholds, there is little doubt that he can do wrong in the eyes of Orange Countians. The major reason for this is that Governor Knight thinks, acts and talks in the terms of the majority of the people residing in this area.
As Governor he stated his thinking in two phrases, not a left winger and not a conservatist when he said "I don't stand with the Left Wingers or those with rigor shortis, reaching back 50 or 60 years to put a block in the way of progress;" and, "You have to work to eat" places his thinking on the give away programs California has attempted to make famous in the last decades. He believes in fairness but he is capable of putting up a battle when the chips fall the wrong way.
One of his strong points is his sense of humor and ability to talk to any man regardless of his position in the economic or social world. He always has time to listen. Not many men who ascend to the top find it convenient to still remember old friends, or they find that old friends do not care to remember them, but our Governor found it a pleasure to seek out old acquaintances as he entered the room, and he called them by their first names or nick names.
It will not be hard to campaign for Knight for Governor in 1954, Knight is a natural for California.

HOLLYWOOD (UP)—One of Hollywood's top "half-pint" accesses said today that it's fun to be tiny only when you've reached the top. Until then it's a real pain at the neck.
The little girl who offered this considered opinion is five-feet-two Susan Cabot, who won the long, numerous battle of being a half-pint in a town, more partial to full quarters and over.
Tall or short, it's a continuously rugged battle for a girl to land good screen roles in Hollywood, and it's the in-betweeners who seemingly get the breaks. It's the shorty, however, who finds the googly toughest.
"I felt like kicking or screaming every time a producer told me he be great in a part except that was too little," said Susan. "I beaman getting a midget complex the to stardom, she said, was to wage a continuous battle against discrimination.
"I had a stock spiel for producers," the actress explained. "I reminded them that nobody speaks of Helen Hayes any more as "that short actress". They only consider her stature as an artist. After all, some people have done some mighty big things, men and women alike.
"The history of show business is full of instances of personalities of whom the critics thought no less because they were half-pints. Take the late Maude Adams, as an example, among yesterday's stars, and Bette Davis as one among today's."
Notwithstanding the historical proof of her argument, Susan still goes in there punching for the breaks. U. I. producers have come to expect a knock on the door whenever there is the slightest possibility of Susan being cast in an important role.

Christian Dior began the battle of the hemlines in late July with some skirt lengths 16 and 17 inches from the floor. Now that the dust has settled here is the whole hemline picture in a paragraph:
Skirts will be one inch to two inches shorter, than last fall depending on whose labels you buy. By spring, you will see another inch chopped off.
Some designers confess that Dior affected them. Others sniff: "We shortened them before Mr. Dior even showed his line."
Three Designers Hold Out Mrs. Eisenhower said recently she was sticking to her current skirt lengths. Women who want to do likewise have three alternatives—let out hemlines of new clothes, wear last year's clothes, or buy from those designers who aren't shortening skirts.
This anti-shortening group includes Hattie Carnegie, Sophie of New York, and Malbnocher. They insist the hemline depends on the most becoming length to the individual.
But designer-by-designer, here is the hemline picture for fall and winter lines already in the stores and with the spring lines on the designing boards (pay your money and take your choice):
OEIL CHAPMAN—Slightly shorter, but none of the extremes of Dior.

Without attempting to defend either position, it may be pointed out that figures are comparative and may be misleading.
If British trade with China continues at its present rate, it will approach $5,000,000 for the year. However, that figure may be compared to the interest and principal paid off by Britain each year to the United States on its post war loans.

WASHINGTON, Oct. 7 — Earl Warren, former governor of California, is now Chief Justice of the United States, which means — or ought to mean—that he is out of politics and out of the political arena where a count of the influences of pressure groups or a count of noses in a legislative body brings decisions on national policy.
Yet already predictions are coming from groups of wishful thinkers that the new member of the Supreme Court will vote to reverse the court's position on civil liberties and give a wider rein to the promoters of Communist imperialism inside America.
Too many people in America in the last 20 years, who talk about "flexibility" through judicial decision, have been indoctrinated with the notion that the Supreme Court of the United States is just another legislative body.
Too many people have been influenced by the late President Franklin D. Roosevelt to believe that it's too much trouble to amend the Constitution in the manner provided in the document itself and that the nine justices are endowed with a mandate to change the Constitution in accordance with the views of changing administrations or pressure groups.
If the American people really want to amend the Constitution and a substantial majority favors it, the process has proved in the past to be relatively rapid.
More harm has been done by the alleged witticism that "the Supreme Court follows the election returns" than by any other single fallacy about a lack of independence in the judiciary unless perhaps it is the frequent misuse of a quotation uttered once by Charles Evans Hughes and repeatedly taken out of context.
That quotation, distorted and misrepresented again and again even by Franklin Roosevelt, was as the Constitution and that they will too busy doing this to be required to decide public-utility cases of an administrative nature.
Mr. Hughes, when he was Chief Justice, bitterly resented the misuse of that quotation by Mr. Roosevelt and told this correspondent it was used out of context. Later on, in his diary notes—which Merlo J. Pusey, in his splendid biography of the Chief Justice, published in 1951—Mr. Hughes wrote about that quotation as follows:
"The inference that I was picturing constitutional interpretation by the courts as a matter of judicial caprice ... was farther from my thought. I was not talking flippantly or in disrespect of the courts, but on the contrary with the most profound respect. I was speaking of the essential function of the courts under our system of interpreting and applying constitutional safeguards, and I was emphasizing the importance of maintaining the courts in the highest public esteem as our final judicial arbiters and the inadvisability of needlessly exposing them to criticism and disrespect by throwing upon them the burden of dealing with purely administrative questions."
A re-reading of the text of his famous Elmira, N. Y., speech, reprinted in the Pusey biography, confirms the above exposition of Mr. Hughes' thought. But the words will doubtless be quoted again again to support the thesis of a certain school of thought which mistakenly holds that after all there are nine votes on the Supreme Court and that decisions are made by reason of political predilections or ideological prejudices.
There may be some men who have been on the Bench and decided questions that way, but the American people sincerely hope that Earl Warren will not be one of them and that he will be guided by his conscience and not by legislation.

"Sure I'm influenced," she said. "I'm making 'em shorter."
Whether her hemlines will go even higher by spring, she isn't sure.
"I don't like them too short," she said, "but, being in the fashion business, I won't make any rash promises."
Henry Rosenfeld, the nation's largest producer of women's ready-to-wear, said his line would be one and ½ inches shorter by spring.
"Sure, women will protest," he said. "But they don't mean it—women really like a change. If you remember, a lot of 'em yelled 'down with Dior' when he lengthened skirts in '47. But they went along—and liked it."

LIBRA (Sept. 24-Oct. 23)—Be the substantial majority favors it, the process has proved in the past to be relatively rapid.
More harm has been done by the alleged witticism that "the Supreme Court follows the election returns" than by any other single fallacy about a lack of independence in the judiciary unless perhaps it is the frequent misuse of a quotation uttered once by Charles Evans Hughes and repeatedly taken out of context.
That quotation, distorted and misrepresented again and again, even by Franklin Roosevelt, was follows: "The Constitution is what the judges say it is." It was never uttered by Mr. Hughes while he was on the bench but during an extemporaneous speech while he was governor of New York state. Placed in its proper context, the quotation merely meant that he felt it was the primary duty of the Supreme Court justices to interpret Your Birthday Forecast (BY STELLA)
WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 7—Born today, you are forceful and determined. You usually know what you want in life and go out after it without too much procrastination. Obstacles or delays in the fulfillment of your original design for life only whet your appetite for it all the more! You can recognize an opportunity and you know enough to grasp it instantly. Those who are envious of your success may call你 an opportunist. But knowing when to hit when the iron is hot is an adage that works as well in any career as it does for a blacksmith!
The stars have given you creative talents in the arts and it behooves you to make the best possible use of these gifts early in life. Although you are not interested in money, if you have to stick your nose too deeply into business affairs, you are happy enough to make it your own way! You have a real gift for money-making too, and probably will be one of those who knows how to make the arts pay splendid dividends.

By ALINE MOSBY
HOLLYWOOD (UP)—The outstanding difference between the movies of tomorrow is liable to be the size of the screens, and not the races of their stars.
America's young movie fans, polled by a movie fan magazine, have selected the stars of the future.
These junior thespians were feted at a recent cocktail party at which the graying members of the Hollywood press leaned from one foot to the other and tried to figure out which player was which.
To me all the handsome, lean profiles looked like Rock Hudson and the scrubbed, pretty young actresses in fluffy dresses looked like Debbie Reynolds.
The winners of these photoplay magazine awards, most of whom I wouldn't recognize even if they were lying down on the giant Cinema-mascope screen, include Carlos Thompson, Charlotte Austin, Kathleen Crowley, Bobby Van, Ben Cooper, Richard Allen, Audrey Dalton, Joan Vohs, Keith Parsons, Chuck Connors, Natalie Wood, Peter Baldwin, Joan Weldon, Bill Hayes and Pat Crowley.
Another apparent "star of tomorrow" rule, besides lacking individuality, seems to be a hep name if possible. Some winners were also named Race Genry, Rick Jason and Marissa Pavan. I was sorry to see Tab Hunter, Doe Avedon, Belle Darvi and Johnny Sands miss out on this contest.
Out of the group of lovely winners, the journalists decided only two stood out with faces that probably will become true. Grade A movie stars in capital letters. Those belonged to tiny Maggie McNama and tall, skinny Audrey Hepburn who may be considered by some movie-makers to be the least physically attractive females there.
But they have individuality, faces to be remembered. Then, of course, they can act too.
If history holds, they'll be luminaries; for down the years it's the so-called physically imperfect faces with individuality that rise to the top and stay there. Katherine Hepburn, Humphrey Bogart, Bette Davis and Greta Garbo have prizes you couldn't forget.
Nobody, for example, ever came close to duplicating the mug of Clark Gable, who is so individual he never fades on celluloid. Twenty years ago Gable starred in "Red Dust." This year it's out again as "Mogambo" with the same leading man.
