The Angels finished third this past year after having been picked for the second division. Abbott, Costello Want Bums for Los Angeles LOS ANGELES (UP)—Comedians Bud Abbott and Lou Costello, maintaining they're not just trying to get laughs, declare they could get the Brooklyn Dodgers to come to Los Angeles for $5,000,000 and a new ball park. The two appeared before the City Council yesterday to be commended for their fight to bring big league baseball to Los Angeles. Costello said if the Dodgers would come to Los Angeles, "We'll put up a stadium." San Antonio and Santa Ana College, two of the always-tough members of the Eastern Junior College Conference, will open the league schedule at 8 p.m. Friday night in the Santa Ana Bowl with the Mounties in the favorite role. Coach John Ward's Dons came out of the 14 to 12 loss to Long Beach last Friday in good physical shape and should be more nearly ready to go than in any game so far. The Dons lost their non-conference opener at Riverside, 13 to 0, then defeated Palomar 7 to 0. The undefeated Mounties opened with an informal scrimmage against Citrus, scoring three touchdowns to one, before playing a 6 to 6 tie with an Alumni team. Then Mt. Sac defeated Taft Junior College, 14 to 0, and last week walloped Ventura College, 34 to 0. Last year, they finished second in the conference behind San Bernardino. Coach Archie Nisbet had only a handful of lettermen returning but a strong fresh squad enrolled. The team is piloted by quarterback Bill Hardy, star of Pomona High's championship team of two years ago. All-League Halfback Fred Knapp, Halfback Bob Radford, Center Dean Givens and Guard Roy Figueroa are among the sophomore standouts. Santa Ana fans were pop-eyed during the last half against Long Beach when the Dons outgained, outpassed and out-first-downed the Vikings in racking up two touchdowns. Then with barely three minutes on the clock, the Dons rolled almost the length of the field before Danny Prall's desperation placekick fell short, five seconds before the gun. With Prall, Bob Switzer, Steve Page and Jack Elder throwing, the Dons completed 8 out of 21 passes for 88 yards and jittery receivers dropped several easy catches. The Dons scored first when Prall ran back a punt to midfield, a defensive penalty put the ball on the Wanna Buy a Broken-Down Baseball Team? NEW YORK — Casey Stengel insisted today that his world champion Yankees "need help" and what's more, he said it with a straight face! Disregarding the snickers which greeted his statement, Stengel said he saw certain signs of future trouble because of the advanced age of his pitching staff. "We're gonna have to make some changes in our pitching staff because of its age. Those fellows just-can pitch as often as they used to any more and that's all there is to it." Two weeks ago, Whittier's Cards defeated FUHS 33-7 as they had done last year in a practice game, by 20-6, but the Indians came back after a week's intensive practice to trounce the favored Monrovia team in score, and playing. The 10-6 victory this year was in retaliation for a 14-0 defeat handed the Indians last year by Monrovia. This Friday's game with South Pasadena will be the greatest test of the new 1953 season.
