Walter Knott Details Calico Deserted Mining Town for Executives' Secretaries
Executives' Secretaries of Orange County and their guests had an interesting evening at Knott's Berry Farm recently, when they gathered in the Calico Saloon where they were entertained with singing and dancing in true mining town style. After a exciting ride on the Ghost Town and Calico Railway, secretaries and guests enjoyed a delicious steak dinner in the beautiful new Garden room. Dinner music was provided by Blue Eagle, a real "Honest Injun" who sang several camp-style songs, accompanied on the guitar by Dee Woolen.
Marie Nelson, program director, introduced her boss, Walter Knott, who gave avid account of the phenomenal growth of Knott's Berry Farm and the subsequent acquisition of "Calico"—a deserted mining town located near Barstow. Actual purchase of the land was made about two years ago with the idea in mind of restoring it as it was during the booming days of the silver strike, 1880.
Knott estimated that it will take about 15 to 20 years to complete the project but feels that the final replica will be a tribute to an important phase in California heritage.
