Stock Market in Orderly Retreat NEW YORK (UP)—Stocks made an orderly retreat today after two weeks of rise. Widest declines appeared in recently strong groups and individual issues. Chemicals were forced down fractions to more than a point. Some of the oils dropped a point or more on spread of gasoline price cutting. Realizing hit the aircrafts and some special issues. The ma'n spring of the decline came from the railroad shares which are performing poorly, according to the financial district. That group was the first to meet selling. Its losses ran to more than a point. Ralls, alone of the major groups, declined on average last week. Soft spots developed in the metals, foods, textiles, mercantiles, and special issues as well as in the oks and rails. A few strong shares stood out with gains of a point or more. These included Panhandle Eastern Pipe Line whose galf sustained the utility average, Procter & Gamble whose rise softened the drop in industrials, Ruberoid, Link Belt, Midland Steel Products, and Middle South Utilities. Commonwealth LA:5760 H12 N. Los Angeles Ph:2325 STNOPSIS The eight guest-passengers aboard the yacht "Sipitane" out of Boston Bahamas, are gripped by terror when a shot is fired in the night and their host and owner of the craft, wealthy, societic Darius Opdyke is reported missing on vessel "Sardonie old Jonas the ship's captain, assembling his passengers in the salon, advising them that Opdyke had a premonition of meeting with foul play on the voyage, and had consequently left his will in Jones' keeping. The document states that the "Spiritus" continue along her course toward South America for seven days, by the end of which period Mr. Opdyke had believed his killer would be revealed. Barry-yed Stewardess Macethis is placed in charge of the women and she watches over them like a jailor. CHAPTER EIGHT THE rest of the night stretched The Spiritus nosed on in a blind circle, barely moving through the thick hot night. The Captain had said that he did not want to leave the area before dawn, in case daylight might show something which had been missed before. Dawn came, and the sea was blank as usual. Soon after, we were all ordered to the afterwell deck, to hear Captain Jonas read the burial service. We stood there in a huddle, afraid to look at each other or at the Captain. Behind us the crew had been assembled, the oilers, known as the "black gang," and the sailors too. Their sowling faces did not look any better by day than they mented bull. "Of course What are you getting lotta?" Carlotta gave him a slip but I thought there was cruelty in it. "Nothing you so upset?" The Captain stopped at which might be making a scrap of paper which had been Gay Walton's floor. He it, "You'll find...under low...use it unless you to see. Gay looked at it all lip. Of all the passengers the strain of THE rest of the night stretched out interminably. From time to time the men tramped past the salon as they went to and fro on their search. I shuddered when I heard them, reminded of a firing squad. Gay Walton had asked Mrs. Macbeth to bring up her evening bag, a flat golden case, from which she extracted comh, powder, and an enormous lipstick. She filled with them for a while, then went to the ladies' room to put her face on again." When she came out with a complete new make-up, she seemed calmer, almost drowsy. Carlotta Redding was now the restless one, pacing the room with catlike strides, starting out of the dark portholes, stretching herself with feline thoroughness. "I think the Captain is insane," she said, and no one contradicted her, although our guard, Macbeth, pursed her lips disapprovingly. "Perhaps he did the shooting himself," I said—a most indiscreet remark. Lisa Tremaine had sent for her knitting, and worked on it spasmodically, when she was not lying back in her chair with her eyes shut as if she wanted to shut out distasteful reality. As for me, I just sat there and tried not to think about Boba. It was the first time I had been separated from him, even for a day. He was such a cheerful baby, I wondered if he missed me. Beside me, Lisa spoke quietly without opening her eyes. "It's horrible for you, isn't it, my dear?" The unexpected sympathy almost made a monkey of me, and I could not answer. Their sowling faces did not look any better by day than they had at night. They kept their eyes on the deck, but they seemed as uneasy as we were at this funeral without a corpse, and their bare feet scuffled surreptitiously. Jonas had taken pains to spare us nothing. The bulwark of the afterwell deck had been unhooked and laid back, and covered with an American flag. At the proper time in the service, two sailors took the corners of the flag, and the transom was tilted as if to let a body slide into the sea. I could not imagine why he went to such macabre lengths unless it was in the hope of breaking one of us down. Sleepless, unwashed, still in the motley costumes in which we had rushed on deck the night before, the Captain gave us no peace. As soon as the imitation funeral was over, he signaled to the bridge, the bridge to the engine room, and the yacht took up her journey again to a destination of which only he was certain. Then he summoned us back to the saloon to inform us as to the results of the search. They were not spectacular. Mr. Opdyke's gold-mounted revolver, which both Randolph and Todd had seen on board, was missing: The Captain had a Colt automatic from which one bullet had been fired. He looked amused rather than disconcerted when it was mentioned. "My Hezekiah fired at a sea-gull yesterday." "That's two murder weapons," said Carlotta's throat voice. "Were there more?" Larry stopped staring at his own great hands, spread out on his knees. "That's all." "Are you sure?" Larry shook his head like a torrilla. The Captain stopped at which might be made producing a scrap of paper which had been Gay Walton's floor. He it, "You'll find... under low... use it unless you..." Then he passed it us to see. Gay looked at it and lip. Of all the passengers showed the strain of a night. Her heart-shaped dead white under the mahser eyes looked as if been smudged in with it. "I tore up some light, and threw the pin the window. This must be back. That's what I in my cabin all evening." "Tearing up letters?" asked. "Tearing up letters," positively. "Perhaps that is why jected to being searched." I didn't want to be because I didn't want to be searched, that's why. I having strangers pay things. You wouldn't want that, I suppose. I am anything. What have you hide? Why pick on me? Frederick Brown intnew worry. "Since we are all equally suspicion," he began,"we are all equally int seeing justice done. I each give an account of during yesterday evening." "We ought to question ard and stewardess fine dolphin said, almost too much." Quite right." Robert t"It will save so much we know what they have about us before we stories." We turned to Todd, still with us by the Captain but his face went blank mind had slammed its had been asleep in the cabib. He had seen he had heard nothing, he had say. Many people have wondered where the name Hog Heaven originated and what it means. D.C. Stanley said that the barbecue originated in the deep South in the old days and was a community get-together. The people, besides having a good time, would eat so much that they were literally stuffed and would say, "This is just like being in hog heaven." Through the years, the term became associated with enjoyment and had a 101 different meanings. However, it is generally used to describe someone at the height of his glory. The Stanley brothers have made Hog Heaven a corporation and the name has been protected in the state for them. They eventually plan to have a chain of restaurants bearing the name Hog Heaven.
