Anaheimer Held Prisoner by Reds Tells Experiences to Optimist Club
It was a dual engagement for Sgt. Manuel Moreno, Anaheim's first returned prisoner of war and Major Ralph Comstock as the two Anaheim men told of their experiences in Korea before the Anaheim Optimist Club Thursday evening. Under a steady barrage of questions the two returned veterans graphically and frankly described conditions.
"These so called progressives I just couldn't understand. I told them to forget the 'peace committee' stuff and act like American soldiers," commented Sgt. Moreno. "Maybe it was that line about getting to be 'big shots' in the Chinese army or the fact that they got decent food and wine but anyway there were those who squashed on the rest of us to gain the Red's favor."
Sgt. Moreno, though a member of Anaheim's Co.K. National Guard, volunteered and joined the Second Division in March 1851. There he became a part of the big push to the Yalu River. On May 17 the Chinese Red Army was encountered. In a day and night battle that saw Moreno's advance outfit dwindle from 200 to 50 from the Anaheim man was wounded.
Suffering five wounds in all parts of the body, his outfit surrounded and long out of ammunition, these American troops were captured.
"Ninety per cent of the men, due to lack of vegetables, were blind for three months.
"Several of our men could speak Chinese. Some of our guards were decent guys. Many of them had been in Chiang Kai Shik's army before they were captured by the Reds. They would go back in a hurry if they had the chance."
Sgt. Moreno and Major Comstock recently spoke from the stage of the Fox Theater before 1000 youngsters attending the Anaheim Optimist free kiddy show. They told of the plight of the Korean children, Major Comstock had taught several to read and write. Moreno was especially pleased to learn that the Optimist theater-going youngsters had voted to "adopt" and support a Korean boy. As a surprise Moreno's mother, Mrs. Hernandez, was introduced and flowers were presented by the Optimist Kiddy Show Club president Clayton White.
President Lloyd Lichtenwalter presided at the Optimist meeting.

DO YOU KNOW??
QUESTION: Our neighbors had a fire in their kitchen and the wall paper in their living room and dining room was ruined by grease and smoke. They told me the insurance company paid them less than the cost of repapering and cleaning. Why should this be?
ANSWER: We don't know about that particular case but it is usually considered fair for an insurance company to settle on a "mileage" basis. In other words, if the paper had been on the walls for say five years, your neighbors had already received some use and wear from it. No doubt the Insurance Company allowed something for wear and paid the balance in agreement on a fair settlement.

RELATE EXPERIENCES—Sgt. Manuel Morena, left, and Maj. Ralph Comstock tell children of the Optimist theater club their experiences while in Korea. Sgt. Moreno was held captive by the Rods and enthralled children and adults alike with his tales of life as a prisoner.
Visually Handicapped Children Aided At Classes in Local Broadway School
A special class at the Broadway School in Anaheim is designed to meet the needs of children, kindergarten through fourth grade, who have poor vision but who, with special instruction and equipment can keep up to grade in their studies.
Bash for referral is 20/70 vision in the better eye after correction, a progressive eye condition, or referral by an eye specialist.
Special equipment includes an ideally lighted classroom with non-reflecting surfaces, light colored desks that tile for better seeing, as well as tilting book racks for library use. The sight saving dictionary has huge print, plus a magnifying glass. Test books follow energy to write as it does to read, children are taught to type in the third grade or 6th grade. The typewriter has plain large type. These children are also given training in listening so that they will not have to read as much. Some of them have difficulty with sparse relationship, others are timid in running.
Raid Kern Area Gambling Joints
SAN FRANCISCO (UP)—State agents arrested four persons in raids on two Kern County gambling joints, one of them as plush "as anything in Nevada," it was announced yesterday.
The raids were disclosed by Harold Robinson, chief law enforcement officer for the State Attorney General's Office. He said Kern County officials had been notified that the establishments and "others like them" were operating.
"Nothing had been done to our satisfaction," Robinson said.
Moved In Friday Night
Moving in about midnight Friday, one team of five officers entered the old Lebee Hotel on Highway 89 just north of the Los Angeles County line.
The agents were delayed admittance to the hotel because of some doubt over their false membership cards. When they finally reached the second floor gambling salon, all activity had ceased, Robinson said.
The down or so customers "stood foolishly idle in a large room appointed with a roulette table, two crap tables, a blackjack table and four card tables," Robinson said.
Furniture Vanishes
The agents were unable to establish use of the equipment. They returned to Bakersfield for a search warrant to confiscate the equipment. When they returned, they found the salon empty except for a few non-gambling tables and occasional chairs.
Robinson said the Lebel Hotel is owned by Harry Burk, Jr., and that the car no is operated by Burk, Howard Mooney and Max Travis of Long Beach.
The other raid, made at almost the same time, was carried out against the Village, a bar and

Special equipment includes an ideally lighted classroom with nonreflecting surfaces, light colored desks that tile for better seeing, as well as tilting book racks for library use. The sight saving dictionary has huge print plus a magnifying glass. Test books follow regular classroom work but have large print. The children use large pencils and write their work in big letters to further prevent eye strain. Letters on the blackboard are also enlarged.
Since it takes twice as much eye energy to write as it does to read, children are taught to type in the 1st grade or 6th grade. The typewriter has plain large type. These children are also given training in listening so that they will not have to read as much. Some of them have difficulty with space relationship, others are timid in running. All of these problems are met by a specially trained teacher.
Because no child should be isolated from his peers, part of each day is spent in a regular classroom. Here the child can participate in music, social studies and other activities that do not require close work.
Children attend this class from all over Orange County. Inquiries regarding placement should be made at the Anaheim School District, or the Orange County Superintendent of Schools.
A class for blind children is in the planning stage. Parents with blind children should contact the Orange County Superintendent of Schools Office so that their child might be included.

Murdy Says Probe Of Unions Slated
Investigation of abuses arising out of supervision of local unions by executive action of their international organizations will be made on a limited basis by the State Senate Interim Committee on Labor, according to Senator John A. Murdy, Jr. of Orange county, a member of the committee.
Meeting in San Francisco last week, the committee heard testimony and requests for an investigation into un-democratic tactics of some unions controlling California locals.
"The committee felt that requests for such investigation could not be ignored by the Legislature," Murdy declared upon returning from the meeting. "and neither could the legislature assume or believe that such conditions exist in the great majority of unions."
The Senator said the purpose of the investigation is to determine whether, or to what extent, such abuses exist, and to determine what, if any, legislation should be introduced to protect the democratic rights of citizens of California who are union members.
"This investigation will be limited to determining whether and to what extent international officials of unions have taken over and continue to control the administration of local unions within this state," Murdy said.
The Orange county senator said testimony placed before committee indicated that some international unions had deprived the local union members of their right to elect their own officers or to administer their own finances, or to receive a proper accounting of funds.
The Committee will concern itself primarily during the interim with a study on Workingman's Compensation administration, particularly in connection with growing misdemeanors from the state.

Nude Chorus Girl Shot by Husband
CHICAGO (UP)—The estranged husband of a bursque chorus girl silently watched her disrobe in the privacy of her hotel room early today and fired a pistol bullet into her nude body.
The attractive brunette, Ethel Mae (Mickey) Carrow, $0, was taken to St. Luke's Hospital with a critical chest wound. When she was able to talk her first words were to ask if her husband was in custody. Police answered yes, "Throw away," the key," she whispered.
"I love her," said the husband, Russell C. Carrow. "I didn't want her to leave me. I hope she gets well."
Bus Wreck Injures 27 in New Jersey

Twenty-two persons were treated at the Underwood Hospital at Woodybury. Five were detained. Five persons were treated at the Cooper Hospital in Camden and two were detained.
Police reported the bus veered to the side of the New Jersey Turnpike it struck the truck. It tipped on its side and skidded along the roadway.

President Plans Busy Winter Social Season
WASHINGTON (UP) — The President and Mrs. Eisenhower are resuming a full fledged social season at the White House this winter after a lapse of seven years.
The White House social season announced over the weekend, calls for six state bishops and five formal receptions between Nov. 3 and Feb. 25. All will be white tie, long gown occasions.
The season will open the first Tuesday of November, nearly a month earlier than in bygone years, with a cabinet dinner. It will end the last Tuesday of February with a reception for members of Congress.
In between, the President and First Lady will entertain all of Washington's top ranking officials, high ranking military officers, the diplomatic corps and the judiciary.
Mrs. Eisenhower, whose reputation as a hostess was well established during her years as a general's wife, is undisputed by the busy winter in prospect.
"I am looking forward to it," she told reporters.
