Anaheim Man Elected OCSSC Vice President George Tatlock of Anaheim was named first vice-president of the Orange County Society for Crippled Children when the group held their annual election of officers in Orange last week. Named to a second term as president was Dr. Le Grand Spencer of Fullerton. Other officers were: Lee Hasenjaeger, second vice-president, from Santa Ana; Harry Siemonsma, treasurer from Orange; Mrs. William Schivo of Balboa Island, recording secretary; and Mrs. Ada Thompson of Yorba Linda, corresponding secretary. Dr. George Williams Hawkins was also named to the group's medical advisory board. The new officers will be in charge of the Society's November meeting. The new members to the Society's board introduced were: Mrs. Louis Olmstead, physical therapy supervisor of the Orange County health department; Andrew J. Fuller, vocational rehabilitation officer; Mrs. Ray Brown, teacher of the special class for handicapped at Lathrop Jr. High School; and Mrs. V. H. Wickstrum of Costa Mesa. Shopping Center Plans Held Up by Planners BANTA ANA—Plans of John A. Prescott to establish a 28-acre shopping center at the northwest corner of 17th street and Newport Avenue under the provisions of a CP (Planned Business) amendment to the County Zoning Ordinance must be set down more precisely before the Orange County Planning Commission will act, it was learned today. Prescott and Charles H. Diggs, planning consultant for the proposed development, were advised to prepare more complete plans and specifications. Coast College AWS Banquet Scheduled Newly enrolled women at Orange Coast college will be honored at the Associated Women Students banquet tonight in the student center, Dean Marie Howes stated today. The banquet is an annual affair which serves to bring together the returning women students and those newly enrolled. A unique feature of the event is an amateur hat making contest. Before taking their places for the banquet, guests are provided with scrape of cloth and other materials with which to develop original millinery, Mrs. Howes said. Officers of the A.W.S. who are in charge of the dinner headed by Marlene Rankin, Costa Mesa, president, are in charge of arrangements. Atom-Powered Airplane Now Under Study WASHINGTON (UP)—The Air Force revealed today that the Lockheed Aircraft Corp. is studying designs for an atomic powered airplane. The Burbank, Calif., firm is the third known to be working on the problems involved in designing a plane powered by a nuclear engine that theoretically could keep a plane aloft forever. Officials emphasized that the actual construction of such a plane is a long way off. They said there is no present plan to reverse the policy of Defense Secretary Charles E. Wilson who said last spring that any atomic plane built on the basis of present knowledge would be a "bum airplane." The main problem is that any plane built now would be too heavy and too slow because of the amount of material necessary to shield the crew against radiation. At the same time, it was indicated by the Commission that some of the provisions of CP Zoning which were adopted in 1950 when Diggs was County Planning Director, may not be favored in the proposal. Objecting to requirement that a detailed plan be filed as part of the zoning ordinance, Commissioners pointed out that subsequent changes could not be made with out amending the County Ordinance. Prescott and Diggs are projecting an elaborate shopping center with extensive parking areas to be landscaped with shade trees to make a park-like surrounding. Don Derr Speaks to Local Realty Board Story of Anaheim's parks and recreational program was outlined Wednesday morning to members of the Anaheim Realty Board by Recreation Director Don Derr when the group met in the Mother Colony Restaurant for breakfast. Derr described the various phases of the city's recreation program and recreational facilities offered for all ages. Realtors Bert Arnold and Thelma Reagan were appointed alternate delegates for the National Convention of Realtors to be held in Los Angeles Nov. 6 through the 13th at the Statler Hotel. Mrs. Vera B. Oster was named the "I Dood It" member for the week by local realtors. Travel, Marriages Fall Off in September SANTA ANA—Although both marriage licenses and passports have dropped off in volume during September in Orange County the totals in the license bureau of the County Clerk's office exceeded figures for 1953 according to Mrs. Evelyn Geren, chief license clerk. Westminster Channel To Be Started Soon WESTMINSTER — Construction of a new drainage channel to carry storm waters from the Westminster area in rainy season will begin soon, following award of a $156,765 contract to the firm of Dimmitt and Taylor of Monrovia. The channel will extend more than five miles carrying the drain to the tidewater in Sunset Bay. In time, the County plans to extend the channel north and east to relieve drainage in the Garden Grove area. The successful bid on the contract was nearly $50,000 below engineering estimates because t he winning firm specializes in earth moving operations, according to P. H. Budd, County flood engineer.
