BARKDULL SACRAMENTO (UP) — Earl Warren's appointment to the U.S. Supreme Court today marks the end of a personal political era in California that lasted nearly 11 years. With Warren leaving, the stage now is set for a Republican ticket in the 1954 elections of Goodwin J. Knight for governor and Harold J. (Butch) Powers for lieutenant governor. Warren's move to Washington after more than a decade in power is expected to set off a political chain reaction in the Republican party in California that will reach all the way from the national level down to the local precinct organizations. Crucial Contests And it sets the stage for some crucial contests in 1954 in which the GOP, lacking the amazing bi-partisan vote getting appeal of Warren, will try to maintain its control of almost every elective state office, the 30-seat congressional delegation and both houses of the Legislature. No one knows, at this point, whether Warren and the loose knit coalition of Republicans and Democrats alike will swing behind a single gubernatorial candidate next year or whether the voters of both parties will divide into splinter groups with no clear cut favoritism for any candidate. But there's no questioning the fact that Knight, the 56-year-old former Los Angeles attorney and judge, is in the driver's seat at the moment. Knight Takes Over Knight automatically takes over as governor of California the day Warren leaves for Washington. That means that the smiling, hard-campaigning Knight, who already has the advantage of being the first full fledged gubernatorial candidate in the field, will run next year as the incumbent governor. And state Sen. Powers, president pro tempore of the Senate, moves up a notch to Knight's vacated post of lieutenant governor. Powers also will gain the valuable political advantage of being able to campaign in '54 as the incumbent if he seeks re-election to a full four year term. Politicians generally agree it's a lead pipe cinch the Modoc County cattleman will be a candidate. Most of the present leaders of WE GIVE J. N. GREEN STREET Open Friday Eve. 'Til 9 P. CENTER the GOP state party organization are Warren supporters, and they'll stay in office until next summer unless, of course, they resign when Warren departs. Party Leaders A. Ronald Button of Los Angeles, the present state chairman of the Republicans, is due to hold office until next August when an election will be held to pick a man to succeed him. While Warren never as governor made a practice of endorsing specific candidates for congressional or legislative seats, he carried many Republicans into office with him and his influence at the polls undoubtedly helped the GOP held power during the last decade. His vote getting appeal undoubtedly will be reflected next year when the GOP tries to maintain its 50-26 edge in the Assembly, 29-11 majority in the Senate and 18-11 margin in the House of Representatives.
