Cypress Notes CHRISTIE DAVIS Anah m 60529 Haskell Kelley, Arga Chairman of the Community Chest Drive, held a kick-off meeting for the workers at his home last week and organized the drive for this area. Chairmen were picked to collect from the larger groups with Mrs. Elena Decker in charge of collections among the dalrymen; Phil Selfridge will take the business district; Mrs. Ann Lucas, Cypress Manor; Mrs. Marie Bollinger, Cypress Acres; and Miss Elizabeth Dickerson, general collections. Kelley explained to the group of 40 volunteers that for the past four years, Cypress has received four times more in aid than it had donated and he hoped that this year the drive would be successful enough to remedy that situation. Mrs. Ray Lucas of 5632 Vonnie Lane, entertained a group of friends in her home last week honoring Mrs. Robert Norton, formerly Castella Rogers, with a post nuptial shower. The affair was informal and the guests were served rolls and sausage patties upon their arrival at the popular ten o'clock coffee hour, while Mrs. Norton unwrapped the many beautifully wrapped gifts. The Lucas home was decorated with colorful flowers and miniature bride and groom sets. Mrs. Lucas was assisted in her duties. If It's News You'll See It In The Bulletin DO YOU KNOW?? QUESTION: I've heard that in order to get a decent premium rate on burglary or theft insurance, the insured persons must take all kinds of expensive precautions. If that is the case, it seems to me that it would be just as costly over a period of time as an actual loss by theft. ANSWER: That is definitely not the case. The Insurance Companies expect only that insured people will take about the same precautions as if they had no insurance. H. H. STABBERT Insurance Agency Since 1929 124 W. Broadway — Ph. Pacific Telephone BREAKS MONOTONY—Lunch box lunches need never become monotonous if you use a little cleverness and ingenuity in planning them. Though sandwiches are an accepted part of most lunches carried away from home, there are many other foods that pack well and replace the sandwich not only adequately, but well. Then too, they satisfy the appetite of a growing boy or hungry man. The trick is simple, a wide-mouthed thermos in which soup, stew, spaghetti or Spanish rice can be kept steaming hot until lunch time. No trouble either, for with all the time-saving packages and canned products and canned tomato sauce, a hot lunch like Spanish rice pronto as directed below can be prepared almost quickly as the old standby sandwich lunch. Time to Plant Bulbs For Spring Flowers Bulb planting time is with us again-so here are some time-honored bedding plants that are useful and adaptable for planting as a bulb-cover. Dash of pepper. 1 teaspoon prepared mustard, if desired. Melt fat in saucepan. Add onion, green pepper, and rice and cook and stir over high heat until slightly browned. Add water, tomato sauce, salt, pepper, and mustard. Mix well. Bring quickly to a boil. Cover tightly, lower heat and simmer gently. For Spring Flowers Bulb planting time is with us again-so here are some time-honored bedding plants that are useful and adaptable for planting as a bulb-cover. Primarily bulb cover plantings should be shallow rooted annuals such as nemesia, schizanthus or Iceland poppy. These produce quick color to brighten the area until the bulbs furnish some color and texture of their own. Such shallow rooted plants require little cultivation and do not disturb bulb plantings set at the correct depth. Nemesia blooms earliest of the above plants and will ordinarily flower through the winter. Because of its restricted lateral growth, it is best used for narrow beds or strip plantings and as a cover for the earlier flowering bulbs such as daffodils, anemones and ranunculus. The bright colors of nemesia which run heavy to red, orange and yellow shades, will lend a cheery air to the winter garden until the advent of the bulbs. Schizanthus makes a heavier growth than the nemesia and is useful for full bed plantings as the mass effect impressive. The color range is through the pastel shades with some half tones of red and purple. If plants are pinched back occasionally, bloom can be maintained well into the spring. Iceland poppy will generally make the latest show of color; so is best worked in as a cover for the later bulbs such as tulips and Dutch Iris. This grand annual gives such a dazzling show of color through late winter and early spring that it will be with regret that it will be discarded to make way for the emerging bulb planting. As a matter of lasting importance, it is suggested that all three of these annuals be used to fill out many other areas of the garden as well as to serve as top-notch bulb planting cover-ups.
