Missing 16th-Century Mass Discovered in Mexico City
A long missing mass by Palestrina, revered 16th-century composer of Roman Catholic Church music, has been discovered in Mexico City by a musicologist from the Los Angeles campus of the University of California.
The important musical find was made by Dr. Robert M. Stevenson while examining an ancient manuscript copied in Spain in 1599. The document contained a 95th mass by Palestrina entitled "Christus Resurgens." Only 94 of Palestrina's masses were previously known.
Palestrina won his highest fame in 1654 when he was asked by the Council of Trent and a committee of eight cardinals to write a mass which would help reform church music, considered by the religious leaders as becoming too secular. The three masses he submitted won such warm praise that he was acclaimed "the savior of music."
"Christus Resurgens," reports Dr. Stevenson, is as short as Palestrina's famous "Missa Brevis" and all four of the voice parts lie within the accepted ranges for choral singers today.
The U.C.L.A. professor is currently en route to Spain to gather material for a history of Spanish music during the time of Columbus.
