The verdict makes the death penalty mandatory for all three. They were found guilty of the March 9 killing of Mrs. Mabel Monahan in her Burbank, Calif., home. Santo and Perkins, prime suspects in Chester, Calif., murder of a grocer and three children, were indicted for a third killing in Nevada City, Calif. McCarthy Seeks Contempt Vote NEW YORK (UP)—Sen. That was 25 years ago—the year that S. H. Kress & Company opened a brand new store in Anaheim. For 25 years, Kress has been demonstrating to Anaheim, that fine quality goods can be brought down to a price that everyone can afford. For 25 years, Kress has been bringing low-cost luxury into thousands of local homes. Reproductions of art masterpieces at 25 percent, realistic artificial flowers at 10 percent, driptype coffee pots and aluminum whistling tea kettles at 50 percent, are just a few of the Kress items that have made possible brighter, more livable homes. The secret of these unbelievably low prices lies in Kress' mastery of the art of mass distribution. Going into business as the country was coming of age industrially, Kress' founders sought to provide a link between the factories' potential for mass production of consumer goods and the need for these goods among the majority of the population. They accomplished this goal through a new and more efficient form of retail distribution based on the five-and-ten-cent chain idea. Regarding retailing as only a transmission belt to bring the factors' abundance within the reach of more people, Kress went directly to the manufacturers, and working with them, introduced goods that set a new standard of merchandise value. IDENTIFICATION BRINGS CONFESSION — Cynthia A. Pfeil, (right), of White Plains, N. Y., was identified as the victim of the "red slippers murder case." Her brutally beaten body was found on country road near Upper Sandusky, O. Her boy friend, Roy Roger Schinagle (left) of Mayfield Heights, O., confessed the crime to police. distribution powers, have come forward with new products to be introduced to the nation through Kress stores. Millions of American housewives have thus been able to buy items for easier living and more attractive homes at Kress long before they were available anywhere else. During the first years of the Company's development it was, of course, necessary to hire men with previous retail experience. But, by 1915 the Company set up a long range training program to build the kind of executive management required to implement the Kress Idea. (Young men were employed from schools throughout the country particularly in cities where Kress stores are in operation. Today's top management officials started as young trainees under this program). Each trainee is given a course in and is ready to efficiently manage a Kress store. That has been the Kress story Anaheim, for 25 years now...m high quality merchandise at prices and the best of the items first. Girl Stow-Away Case Dismissed LOS ANGELES (UP)—The capade of 18-year-old Joan Rison who-embarrassed Navy officers by donning a sailor's form and stowing away aboard battle cruiser USS Los Angles had a happy ending today. Regarding retailing as only a transmission belt to bring the factors' abundance within the reach of more people, Kress went directly to the manufacturers, and working with them, introduced goods that set a new standard of merchandise value. To lower prices even more, Kress instituted chain-wide efficiency methods that cut overhead. The resulting bargains created a demand for new Kress stores. With each store opening, Kress' buying power increased and even better values were made available to the public. Rumor that a woman was aboard soon started a frantic search and Miss Garrison was found 12 hours later cowering in a locker below decks, frightened by firing of the ship's batteries. The ship immediately returned its feminine passenger to port, one Navy spokesman terming her case a "once-in-a-lifetime incident—humorous in some aspects..." When the charges were dismissed, Miss Garrison commented: "Suits me fine. I won't even ask for any GI benefits." Rapid Production Of H-Bombs Seen WASHINGTON (UP) — An informed source said today this country is nearing the point where it can start assembly-line production of hydrogen bombs. Up to now the Atomic Energy Commission has put together only a mammoth hydrogen test "device" plus, it is believed, a very small number of deliverable H-bombs. Both the experimental device, exploded at Eniwetok last fall, and the bombs, hastily assembled in the months since the test blast, were crude forerunners of the more compact and efficient weapons to come. They also were extremely costly. Unofficial estimates of the cost of the Eniwetok experimental explosion have run as high as 100 million dollars. There are indications, however, that the Atomic Energy Commission's weaponers at Los Alamos, N. M., and Livermore, Calif., are licking the technical difficulties which made the Eniwetok test device both costly and far too bulky for airplane delivery. The test device was as big as a beachcomber's shack whereas the deliverable H-bomb, though sizeable, is small enough to be carried by the country's newest long range heavy bomber, the jet propelled B52. H-bomb costs will fall steadily as the one billion 500 million dollar Savannah River atomic explosives plant near Alken, S. C., gets into production. This plant will produce both plutonium for A-bombs and tritium for H-bombs. Tritium for last fall's test was produced slowly and expensively in atomic reactors at Hanford, Wash., which were originally designed for another purpose.
