Ceremonies Set Monday To Seat Shea, Tiday SANTA ANA—Ceremonies Monday at 9 a.m. will seat Judge John Shea of Anaheim-Fullerton Municipal Court as Orange County's fifth Superior Court judge, and on that day, Atty. Ronald Tidy of Garden Grove will take over as Shea's successor at Anaheim. Presiding Superior Judge Raymond H. Thompson will officiate at the swearing-in ceremonies in Dept. 2 as all four present high court judges sit en banc on the bench. Frank H. Bowman, president of the Orange County Bar Association, will invite his members to the Monday morning ceremony when the lawyers have their regular lunch-on session Friday. Both Shea and Tidy now have their commissions of appointment by Gov. Warren. More on UC Extension For teachers in the Santa Ana area, University of California Extension will open an education education course in Methods of Teaching Elementary Science next Wednesday, Sept. 30, at 7 p.m. at Santa Ana College, 1530 West 17th St., Santa Ana. Instructor in the accredited course, which includes 15 consecutive Wednesday evening two-hour meetings, will be Anna Holman, nationally known author and lecturer in the field and former faculty member of the Windsor School of Boston. Like the British doctor, the American medical educators, who were co-directors of a medical education survey and whose report was published by McGraw-Hill, gave a note of warning: "The vision of greatness must be preserved," they wrote. "It must not be lost in the medical school in a welter of service, research, training, and welfare functions. The greatest need of the medical schools today is clear, critical thought, by men who are sincerely interested in the education of students and who have an understanding of educational principles, a knowledge of science, and a familiarity with social and economic trends. Such men must have courage and faith in the idea that the quality of medical education in the last analysis will determine the future of medicine in the United States." All were discussing a particular trend in medicine in this age of science, a trend which they, along with many other practitioners and teachers of medicine, oppose but which progresses anyway. Dr. John E. Deltrick and Robert C. Berson in a voluminous report on Medical Schools in the United States at Mid-Century," said: "Certain phases of patient care in teaching hospitals require analysis and improvement. In the search for knowledge concerning disease, the medical schools have focused their attention on smaller and smaller segments of the human body, and medical knowledge has become divided into more and more specialized fields. Technique Over-emphasis "The professional responsibility for patients is often divided among a team of specialists and a house staff. Thus there develop such fragmentation of the patient that often he is described in the teaching hospital as a 'case' or is referred to by the name of a disease. The trend is antagonistic to the impression the student should be given that patients—not diseases—are the subject matter of medicine." Dr. S. M. K. Mallick, fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and dean of the Dow Medical College in Karachi, Pakistan, told a recent world conference on medical education held in London that "over-emphasis on technique is adversely affecting the concept of the (medical) profession." "Consideration of the patient as an individual with a peculiar environment and a particular psychic background is largely ignored," he continued. "The stethoscope, the X-ray, and the electrocardiogram have come so much into the limelight that the poor patient whose coronary artery or valve is the subject of this instrumentation is lost in the shadows of the umbras and the penumbras.
