Humphrey Bogart Leaves Studio After 17 Years HOLLYWOOD (UP)-Actor Humphrey Bogart said today he has asked for his release from the balance of his contract with Warner Brothers and the release has been granted by the studio. "In the 17 years since I was first signed by Warner Brothers, our relationship has always been most friendly and business-like and I will be most happy to do pictures with WB anytime in the future and look forward to receiving scripts from them," the screen tough guy said. The 15-year one-picture-a-year contract was entered into in 1946. Bogart's own Santana Productions recently completed "Beat the Devil," co-starring Bogart and Jennifer Jones. Civilian Employment Jumps During August SACRAMENTO (UP)—Civilian employment in California at the end of August totaled 4,987,000, an increase of 63,000 over July, state officials reported yesterday. Fruit and vegetable canneries accounted for most of the increase of 41,000 in manufacturing employment. Construction industries showed an increase of 18,000 but government employment dropped 3000 below the July figure. Unemployment underwent its usual seasonal decline, dropping by 21,000 between July and August to a total of 152,000, the same figures as in Augustt, 1952. It's supposed to be a Third Avenue bar in New York, but we can't make it too low-down." He added sadly, "If I had all the money in the world I'd say I'd do it my way and be arty, but these groups might pressure the sponsor." Networks Doomed The "Duffy's Tavern" that was a favorite on radio for 12 years will be filmed for television, minus most of the tavern and sold to individual stations instead of being beamed by the network. This makes Gardner the first comedian to try his show that way and he thinks it'll start a trend toward putting the networks out of business. "Networks were doomed from the beginning," boomed Gardner in his best Brooklyn-esse. "Eventually television will be like motion pictures, with individual good producers putting on shows. Networks don't produce great shows. I never got a good idea from one in the 12 years I was on' radio." One Reason Gardner has moved back to Hollywood after years of living in Puerto Rico, where he once taped his radio show. He quit the airwaves a year and a half ago "because nobody had money to put into radio any more." Then he decided to retire and travel around Europe.
