LARGE PIPE SECTION—Reportedly the largest of its kind in the world is this 165-ton water pipe section through which 75 cubic meters of water will pour per second. It's being installed at a power plant under construction on the River Lech, in Offenbach, Germany. An idea of its size can be gotten from the height of the two gals standing on the stairs. It's being installed at a power plant under construction on the River Lech, in Offenbach, Germany. An idea of its size can be gotten from the height of the two gals standing on the stairs. International Scientist Group Warns Polio Becoming World-Wide Problem ROME (UP)—An international committee of scientists warned today that poliomyelitis threatens to become a serious problem throughout the world and urged the setting up of regional research laboratories. The eight committeemen also condemned "widespread and indiscriminate administration of gamma globulin to persons who have had no known contact with poliomyelitis." Under the chairmanship of Dr. John R. Paul, professor of preventive medicine of Yale University, the committee submitted a report to the United Nations World Health Organization after a week's study here. Fellow members of the committee included Dr. Thomas Francis Jr., professor of epidemiology of the University of Michigan, and Dr. A. J. Rhodes, director of research of the Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, Canada. Epidemic poliomyelitis presents one of the most formidable problems of public health today, the report said, and what causes concern is the "complete failure so far to control the disease." No Treatment Perfect "Treatment, prolonged and expensive as it is, is only a palliative," the report said. "A nerve cell, once irreparably damaged, cannot be replaced. The scientists recommended the establishment by the world health group of research laboratories all over the world to identify, type and study the strains of polio virus and provide materials for diagnosis and typing to an international research network. A number of "urgent" research projects should be started by the laboratories, they said. The scientists gave the following advice to the public during polio epidemics. Wash hands before eating and after using a toilet. Keep files away from all food and thoroughly wash all uncooked food such as fruit or vegetables. Avoid intimate association (shaking hands, common utensils, common towels, etc.) with members of a family in which a case of polio has occurred within three weeks. Treat all fever illnesses with E. German Reds Demand Workers Boost Output BERLIN (P) — Walter Ulbrich No. 1 East German Communist, has demanded that workers increase their industrial output with out any corresponding increase in wages, it was disclosed today. He even hinted that wages may be reduced. It was a demand for increased production that set off the bloody June 1 uprising against the Communists. Ulbrich made his demand in a speech yesterday to the East German Communist party Central Committee. Apparently it sounded the definite end of the "soft" policy the Reds adopted after the workers revolt of June. "A serious increase in work productivity is needed in all parts of our industry." Ulbrich said. But while a speed up is essential Ulbricht said, no wage increases will be permitted because prices of consumer goods must be reduced. He gave an implied warning also that under the Communist program of raising the standard of living, wages might even be reduced. Classes in Parent Education Offered Parents will be interested to learn that two classes in parent education will be available this year, Dr. Hill J. Priest, Assistant Superintendent of Orange Coast College, declared today. A class for mothers with children between the ages of one and a half and five will be held each Monday from 10 am. to 2 p.m. at the American Legion hall in Costa Mesa. Mothers will bring their children to the class and will receive training in observing and interpreting behavior demonstrated by the children. Attention will also be given to individual problems introducec The scientists gave the following advice to the public during polio epidemics. Wash hands before eating and after using a toilet. Avoid intimate association (shaking hands, common utensils, common towels, etc.) with members of a family in which a case of polio has occurred within three weeks. Treat all fever limes with caution, Bed rest, or at least the avoidance of over-exertion, for a period of a week, is advisable. Avoid over-exertion. General movement of people in and out of communities where the disease is prevalent should be discouraged. Public health officials were advised, if faced with an outbreak of polio, that there is no need to close public schools, forbid public gatherings or shut swimming pools provided the water is adequately chlorinated. Likewise, the report said, international travel restrictions are not justified.
