City Sidelights by SPURGEON SPARKS Anaheimers note the mention that the Order of the Sisters of St. Joseph have accepted a deed to the so-called Sunny Hills hospital site from the North Ogange County Hospital Association. This announcement followed on the heels of the word from Hubert Ferry that his organization was prepared to make a sizable donation to the Sunny Hills site. This firm that Mr. Ferry serves so ably, is of course the Union Oil Co., holder of much of the oil leases in the La Habra-Fullerton area. All this is interesting to local persons interested in obtaining a class-A hospital which will serve the greater Anaheim area. To the readers of the Bulletin who have followed the course of the hospital "squabble," it is quite clear how the La Habra hospital group (St. Jude) happened to "throw in" with the Fullerton crowd. Especially since Dr. R. Fernandes, La Habra physician and spokesman for the Sisters of St. Joseph has so often intimated the Order would never again enter Fullerton with a hospital. As most people know, the Order was denied the use of at least one and possibly two possible hospital sites in the La Habra area when sub-surface oil leases held by Union precluded use of the surface for a hospital. Since the Order chose to ignore the findings of the Quinton Engineering report which turned down the Sunny Hills site and selected a location near Orangethorpe and Euclid avenues, one must wonder at the pressure exerted upon the religious group. This has not affected the question of a hospital for Anaheim; indeed it has quickened the desires of local civic leaders to back an adequate hospital program for the Anaheim area which includes Santa Ana Canyon, Yorba Linda, Placentia, Atwood, Los Alamitos, Stanton, Cypress, Buena Park, and even Garden Grove. With incorporation nearly completed on the Mother Colony Hospital Association, the good news should be forthcoming soon on local plans. Most citizens of Southern California are overlooking a good bet. This is CD or Civil Defense. Experts in civil defense are in possession of information concerning our National safety which definitely should enlist plenty of cooperation from the population; but somehow fails. In line with preparations for public safety, medical supplies including surgical dressings, blood plasma and combination cots and litters have been delivered to CD officials in Anaheim. The officials are willing to spend hours each month in preparation for eventualities—why shouldn't you? We know of no finer public movement than the Community Chest. This unified method of meeting the requirements of the community through one-source giving, is meeting with increased favor each year. One certain phase of the Chest is Children's Hospital in Los Angeles where your children and mine may receive specialized treatment is obtainable when needed. Only through Red Feather organizations, can all needy children receive the medication they require regardless of family funds—through the generosity of your Community Chest. Brown Says U.S. Weakly Guarded BELLFLOWER (UP)—State Attorney General Edmund G. Brown has charged that the lightly guarded Mexican border is an invitation for "thousands of saboteurs to enter for our destruction." In an address before the Bellflower Rotary Club last night, Brown said the ease with which nearly a half-million Mexican wet-backs crossed the border into California this year clearly indicated "representatives of unfriendly nations can use the same methods of infiltration." "Our failure to be aware of the potentialities of this situation might promote an overconfidence of an easy victory for any potential invader," Brown said. "The open roads that have permitted 416,000 'wetbacks' (Mexican border jumpers) to enter our state in one year could easily be the freeway for hundreds or thousands of saboteurs to enter for our destruction." Brown called for "realistic control of those entering this country" "federal recognition of this try" and warned that there must be federal recognition of this hazard." "We do not propose an iron curtain between Mexico and the United States," the state legal officer said. But, he added "It is certainly unrealistic that we maintain stringent checks at all other ports of entry and yet leave open and unprotected the borders to our south." "Our first line of civilian defense should be eternal vigilance at our avenues of entry," Brown said. Joseph McCarthy today and said the controversial Wisconsin Republican was "right 99 times out of a hundred." While recording a broadcast for an American network, Hope offered to answer questions from the audience in London's Palladium. "What do you think of McCarthyism?" someone asked. "I think it's Americanism," Hope said. "You must have opposition in any free government. I think he is honest and fighting for what he believes is right." Boores and catcalls followed. "All right," Hope cracked. "Let's go out in the alley." The audience laughed and clapped. "Some people think McCarthy is wrong. Personally, I think he is right 99 times out of a hundred," Hope said. Four Faiths Outlined For Exchange Club Four faiths which are necessary for true understanding of our American freedoms, were outlined to Exchangites yesterday, the 166th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Headed by Chaplain McKinley Walker of Exchange, the panel composed of Gilbert Koehler, Don Bates, Carlton Barthelmes and Bert Kenyon, told members of the beliefs which made freedom in America possible. These included faith in God, faith in ourselves, faith in our fellow man and faith in freedom. The program, held at the Dragon Cafe, was presented by Chairman Lowen Casey while President George Carter presided. Present for lunchon was Clyde Keith, special representative of the National Exchange Club. Read Your Church Announcements in Saturday's Paper. The source did not specify which court would try Farouk, but it was understood President Mohammed Nagub's government was considering formal charges against the mourned monarch. He identified the slain officer as Army Lt. Abdel Kader Taha. Attorney General Hafez Sabek demanded in January that eight men be put to death for the young lieutenant's assassination in 1950. Speculation that Farouk might be tried came on the eve of the indictment of the first persons to be prosecuted on charges of plotting against the state. The tribunal met today for a last minute review of the list of defendants and the indictments to be brought against them.
