Golden Bears Tabbed to Assume Roll Of "Spoiler-Darkhorse" in PCC Race
By HAL WOOD
BERKELEY (UP) — The California Golden Bears, long a power on Pacific Coast Conference gridiron circles, lost 27 men by graduation at the close of the so-so 1952 campaign.
But they probably will be a power again this year. In fact, they may decide who will go to the Rose bowl, even if they don't make the grade themselves.
Coach Lynn (Pappy) Waldorf's biggest trouble is to find a quarterback who can call a signal without stumbling over his own words. Right now the No. 1 candidate for the job is Paul Larson, very fine halfback, but a fellow who never before has had the responsibility of calling signals. Sammy Williams the lad who was supposed to handle the job, was injured in practice and probably will be out for the season.
Graduation Losses
Among the men lost by graduation were All American fullback Johnny Olszewski; halfback stars Billy Powell and Don Johnson; three quarterbacks: Billy Mais, Jay Willsey and Dick Lee; and such line standouts as Bob Karpe and Ralph Krueger.
But the Bears aren't exactly deprived of experienced talent. They have 18 lettermen back, at least one in every spot, exclusive of quarterback.
They will be particularly strong against fullback, where Jim Dillon, Steve Dimeff and Don Harris will compete for the starting role. The halfbacks, now that Larson is full-fledged quarterback may be State and San Jose State; and six conference games.
The schedule:
Sept. 19—Baylor at Berkeley.
Sept. 26—Oregon State at Portland.
Oct. 3—Ohio State at Berkeley.
Oct. 10—Penn at Philadelphia.
Oct. 17—San Jose State at Berkeley.
Oct. 24—Southern California at Berkeley.
Oct. 31—UCLA at Los Angeles.
Nov. 7—Washington at Berkeley.
Nov. 14—Oregon at Berkeley.
Nov. 21—Stanford at Stanford.

SOME DAY, POW!—Although some older veterans chew tobacco during their working hours, young Mickey Mantle, Yankee slugger, prefers the less strenuous job of chewing bubble gum. Mantle surprised fans at Yankee Stadium during White Sox game by popping bubbles. Kind of dangerous for a centerfielder if sudden pop fly should come his way.

ANGELES (UP) The UCLA will open their football sea-gainst Oregon State in the Dressen Leaves Team to Scout Yanks; Bums Have Five Starting Pitchers
NEW YOR (UP) Manager Charley Dressen of the Dodgers, boasting he has five pitchers he can start in the World Series, indicated today he will open with Carl Erskine and use rookie Bob Milliken as early as possible.
Dressen hinted at these pitching plans yesterday during a sparring session with reporters at the afternoon scouting the Yankees with his sides, Andy High and Red Corriden. The Dodger skipper had left his team in the west to give the Yankees a personal look-over.
When a reporter asked Dressen after the game what was his impression of the champion, he answered with a smile:
"There isn't much more we can learn about them that we didn't know from last year's World Series."
"Last year when we went into the series, they all said I had only one pitcher I could start in the opening game—Joe Black," Dressen said. "This year I could start five."
"Erskine is my number one pitcher," the chatty little Dodger manager said. "I said long ago as soon as he got control he'd win 20. Well, this seems to be the year. Last year he had a sore arm. This year it's gone and his stuff is better than ever."
THIS IS TRAINING?—Female autograph hunters often swam heavyweight Roland La Starza as he takes time out from training at Greenwood Lake, N. Y. La Starza is getting in shape for his coming September 24th bout with heavyweight champion Rocky Marciano. But this attention isn't an actual part of the training program, and La Starza is doing a lot of work.

Dons to Employ Both Single Wing and "T" Attack--Ward Confident
Santa Ana's Dons will open the junior college football season this Friday night (Sept. 18) in a non-conference game at Riverside College.
Coach John Ward conducted his first eight practice sessions under the lights at Municipal Bowl, then transferred drill to the Don turf under the hot afternoon sun. While the turnout of more than 50 players is under some previous years, Ward was confident that his first season as head coach will produce a strong team.
The Dons will use a T formation and single wing, largely built around the triple-threat ability of Harley (Wick) Lobo, Capistrano's all-star quarterback who played out his fresh year as captain of the Missouri U freshmen. Ward also has strength behind Lobo with such men as Gary Mark, formerly of Garden Grove and Grants Pass, Letterman Bob Switzer and Sal Vasquez, a former Saint.
What had promised to be a gap at tackle is being filled by big Bill Miller, the Santa Ana High center who played in the prep all-star game at San Diego; Chuck Lyons, John Duchart, Loule Stephens, Dan Berg and Larry Holcomb.
Santa Ana should have one of the conference's best guard combinations in Co-Captains Eddie Liptrap and Jack Moynihan, Liptrap, at left guard, is being alded by Darrell Cooney, Frank Wilk and Bob Davis, while right guards behind Moynihan are Clinton Wells and Dave King.
Centers are plentiful, with Gene Geselle, Anahelm's great prep star, John Linquist, a former Orange fullback; Vic Maffett and Douglas Manning.
Yank 'Farms' Held Good Source for Reviving Aged Pitching Staff
By FRED DOWN
NEW YORK (UP) — General Manager George Weiss, crediting "continuing productivity of the farm system" as the key factor in the Yankees' unprecedented march to five straight pennants, said today the team's amazing success story "could continue indefinitely."
"We see no reason why we cannot or should not go on winning," Weiss said. "Our farm system is in good shape, our personnel is young and we have not lost our ambition."
Weiss, who shares with Manager Casey Stengel the greatest credit for the Yankees' unprecedented Yeat, singled out the team's aging pitching staff as "our No. 1 problem for 1954."
"We may or may not have the young pitchers we require to take over from the older hurlers," Weiss explained. "Whitley Ford took up some of the slack this year but the advanced ages of our three star pitchers—Vic Raschi, Allie Reynolds and Ed Lopat, forced Stengel to scramble with the staff most of the season.
"I believe we will be able to add the necessary young pitchers and stand a good chance of winning a sixth straight pennant in 1954." he continued. "But, of course, we can't be sure. And we
