Washington State Opens Rugged Ten-Game Schedule Against Trojans
(Editor's note: This is the second in a series of team-by-team analysis of PCC football teams).
PULLMAN, Wash. (7)—Washington State's Cougars, whose nose dive last year was blamed in part to the 35-7 thumping handed them by Southern California in the season's opener, begins the 1953 football campaign against the same Trojans, again a powerhouse.
What effect the Sept. 19 clash here will have on Cougar morale and record book is anyone's guess. But it's a dubious way to begin a rugged 10-game schedule which also includes such titans as UCLA, Texas Christian and Iowa.
Coach Al Kircher isn't saying how his Cougars will fare.
11 Players Graduated
Kircher has 17 returnees, but 11 other lettermen, including five who signed professional contracts, won't be back to help despite a WSC news service prediction that "pre-season ratings probably will place the Cougars in the cellar of the Pacific Coast Conference."
The Cougar coach will concede he has a "good passing club," better balance than last year and "probably a little more depth and speed."
Obscuring Kircher's aspirin bottle is the broad shadow of Bob Burkhart, an all purpose, both ways quarterback who passes, blocks, punts and kicks off with the best of the conference.
Burkhart, the key to Cougar chances, holds the conference touchdown pass record for one
Ice Follies of 1954
Coming to Pan Pacific
The slender blonde beauty whom Oscar Johnson, co-owner and co-producer of the Ice Follies, calls the world's greatest feminine skater, will again perform with the fabulous Ice Fillies when it has its world premiere at the Pan Pacific, Sept. 17.
She is luscious Betty Schalow, the St. Paul, Minnesota, cutie, who graduated from the amateur championship ranks to Ice Follies stardom not so many years ago.
Curvaceous Betty boosts a unique style and amazing speed on the ice. Her jumps and splits are amazing in that she appears to float through space.
In this year's 18th annual edition Betty is featured in the lavish production, "Dream Come True," one of the typical Shipstads and Johnson out-of-this-world ideas...

Speed Merchants
Bidding for the tailback spot are three speed merchants. They are senior Wayne Berry, 170; Jim Hagerty, 180; Pasdena Junior College transfer; and sophomore Bob Iverson, 180.
Mert Purnell, fleet 180-pound junior, has a good chance at wingback post. Junior Chuck Beckel, 190, who averaged 5.2 yards a carry in 1952, and Duke Washington, 175, hard driving junior, are battling for the fullback slot.
Leading line prospects include ends Howard McCants, 235, and Howard Steele, 190; tackles Milt Schwenk, 215, and Vic Weitz, 190; guards Mel Thompson, 180; Phil Gardner, 180; and Ted Brose, 215; and centers Herb Carlson, 195, and Skip Pixley, 210.
The WSC schedule:
Sept. 19—Southern California at Pullman.
Sept. 26—College of Pacific at Stockton.
Oct. 3—Iowa at Iowa City.
Oct. 10—Oregon at Pullman.
Oct. 17—Idaho at Moscow.
Oct. 24—UCLA at Los Angeles.
Oct. 21—Stanford at Palo Alto.
Nov. 7—Texas Christian at Spokane.
Nov. 14—Oregon State at Corvallis.
Nov. 21—Washington at Seattle.
Local Midget Drivers At Long Beach, Friday
The midgets run again this Friday night at Long Beach Memorial Stadium, with the 100-lap Grand Prix as the evening's feature.
Bill Cantrell, 1952 URA champion, will enter and drive his own car.
Doug Carouthers is entering his car, with Don Cameron, as driver.
Don "Red" Emonds will also drive having been signed by a Pasadena owner.

Beavers Have New Team and Stadium
By HOWARD APPLEGATE CORVALLIS (UP) — Two big building jobs were under way on the Oregon State College campus today, a new football stadium and a football team to play in it.
The stadium is scheduled to be ready for the homecoming game against Washington State Nov. 14. When the football team will be ready is anyone's guess.
As Coach Kip Taylor puts it: "It will still be tough."
This season 20 lettermen are gone, among them fullback Sam Baker, the greatest ground gainer in the school's history. Of the 18 lettermen returning, only four are two stripers.
Could Be Good
The line looks strong in the middle and weak elsewhere. The backfield appears fair and could be good.
Captain Laverne Ferguson, one of the previous two year lettermen, and Bill Johnson, whom Taylor thinks will be one of his best, hold down the guard slots. At center is Joe Fulwyler, a 60-minute man of theteam last season.
At tackle, Taylor is counting on two reserves from last year, Jim Luster and Ron Aschbacher. Wes Ediger is the only letterman back at end.
Backfield Veterans
Taylor figures on two-year letterman Jack Pinion, an explosive type runner, at fullback.
Quarterback Jim Withrow is the team's passing threat, and will share quarterback duties with Ron Siegrist, a good defensive man.
A 195 pound fellow named Jim Rock should put the Beaver back-field above Art Rock, a transfer from the U.S. Naval Academy, was named the outstanding player in spring practice and can play either full or right half.

Sports Parade
By OSCAR FRALEY
NEW YORK (UP) — Thousands of bitterly disappointed college stars undoubtedly will grind their gridirons in rage today over the astounding news that there are only 11 players on Fearless Fraley's preview All American football team.
Picking an All American team at this time of the year actually makes better sense than it does in December. This way you don't have to pretend that you've seen all the candidates.
It's a lot safer, too. Because when you do it in the accepted post-season fashion, you usually wind up with some bum who didn't even show up, had chillblains, two left feet or came down with scholiastic scurvey.
Here's His Picks
My guys, as of the moment, are sure fire, can't miss, guaranteed to last until October candidates. Without further apologies, here they are:
End: Don Doheny, Michigan State.
Tackle: Ed Meadows, Duke.
Guard: J. D. Roberts, Oklahoma Center; Dick O'Shaughnessy, Michigan.
Guard: Steve Elsenhauer, Navy.
Tackle: George Jacoby, Ohio State.
End: Tom Miner, Tulsa.
Quarterback: Jackie Parker, Mississippi State.
Halfback: Paul C.Aerpm, UCLA.
Halfback: Paul Giel, Wisconsin.
Fulback: Johnny Lattner, Notre Dame.
Second Team Choice
Second team: Ends, Joe Collier, Northwestern, and George Black, Washington; Tackles, Chuck Doud, UCLA, and Ed Culpepper, Alabama guards, Morgan Williams, TCU, and Joe D'Agostino, Florida; center, Jim Neal, Michigan State; backs, Buddy Leake, Oklahoma;
Gene Filipski, Villanova; Leon Hardeman, Georgia Tech, and Alan Ameche, Wisconsin.
As you can see, under the one platoon system they really have given the game back to the boys.
Meadows, at 22, is the "old man" of the outfit. But you've got to admit that these boys have had their Vitamins and all of them can play this two way game, too.
One thing sure, if they show u

thing sure, if they show up you'll be hearing plenty about all 11 of them. Not that I'm making any excuses, understand, because my theory is that by December not even Old Fearless will remember who he picked anyhow. And that way I get two columns out of it.
