British to Open Probe Into Shelling of Ship HONG KONG — Vice Adm. Sir Charles Lambe, British naval commander in chief in the Far East, flew from Singapore to Hong Kong today to take charge of an investigation into the shelling of a British navy launch by a Chinese Communist warship. A navy communique said seven men were killed, six navy men and a member of the Hong Kong defense force. Five were wounded, one seriously. Navy authorities here asserted that the Communist ship fired on Navy Launch No. 1323 in international waters. But an Admiralty communique issued in London said it had not yet been possible to determine the exact position of the launch. "It was not, however, in British territorial waters," this communique said. The Foreign Office in London said it is awaiting an official report before deciding what action to take, presumably a protest to the Chinese Communist government. The British announcement said the shelling occurred "about seven miles southwest of Lintin Island" in the Pearl River Estuary between Hong Kong and the Portuguese colony of Macau. A Chinese Communist gunboat intercepted an American pleasure boat in the same area six months ago and kidnapped U. S. newsman Richard Applegate and Don Dixon and Merchant Marine Capt. Ben Krasner. Nothing has been heard from them since. We're right proud of how much our little want ads do. Eckel Made Responsible For Count of Funds SANTA ANA—County Auditor L. H. Eckel now has exclusive responsibility for making monthly count of the funds of Orange County, following action of the Board of Supervisors in changing the procedure. Until now, the task has been shared with the district attorney and the chairman of the board of supervisors, but new state legislation permits elimination of the requirement to have the observers. A grand jury audit is conducted each year to verify the auditor's count on funds held by the county treasurer. Local Business Zone Okayed in Garden Grove GARDEN GROVE—A local business zone has been authorized by the county supervisors for both sides of Wright St., between Garden Grove Blvd. and a point south of Stanford Ave., after no objections were voiced at a public hearing. Te riot yesterday followed mysterious fire, possibly setting inmates, that destroyed the prison's metals plant and did at least $300,000 damage. The convicts evidently believed the destructive rebellion to prevent ventilation in cells during yesterday's 90-degree heat. State policemen took up state along the prison walls and forced guards entered cell blocks to gas the prisoners into suburbs. Since the convicts were in the cells during the wild uprising they could not attack the guards state troopers but they screamed their defiance at the law agency turned their cells upside down to vent their anger. Deputy Warden Al Rembl said the riot started about 7 PDT last night after men from block 5 were taken to the hall. Fourteen of the men threw dishes and began smashing the hall equipment. Guards promptly marched back to their cells where they began screaming abuses and troying fixtures. About 1500 convicts are confined at the institution which has facilities for extra protective measures compared with the State Department Fortress Wisconsin.
