Cyprus Island Villages Crumbled by Earthquakes NICOSIA, Cyprus UP — Violent earthquakes crumpled four villages and buried an unknown number of townsmen on this storied Mediterranean island today. The tremors jolted inhabitants from one end of the 160 mile long island to the other. Many were tossed from their beds or covered by falling debris when the first shock struck. GOP Says Alleged Four-Percenter Won’t Get Post WASHINGTON (UP) — Republican sources said today manufacturers’ agent Warren L. Stephenson, under congressional fire as a per center, will not be getting that political appointment he was reported shooting for. A spokesman for the Republican National Committee pointed out that Stephenson, who rode President Eisenhower’s campaign train, helped stage his inaugural, and was a founder and secretary of a swank new club for Republican congressmen here, does not now hold any official party post. He indicated furthermore that Stephenson is not likely to win either party or government appointment in the near future, unless he should emerge wholly in the clear from the current controversy over alleged “influence peddling” in the promotion of sales to the military. Testimony before a House Armed Services Subcommittee showed Early indications were that the southeastern district of Paphos was hit hardest. The extent of damage could not be determined immediately because communications were disrupted. But reports filtering through this capital city of 40,000 inhabitants in northeast Cyprus said the port of Paphos and the villages of Djidasst and Stroumbl were rocked heavily, with many buildings tumbling into the streets. At Platres and Trodos, fashionable summer resort 40 miles southwest of the capital in the Olympus Mountains, residents searched the rubble choked street for victims. The British annexed Cyprus at the beginning of World War I in 1914 and formally made it a colony 11 years later. It first was settled by Phoenicians in 800 B.C. and the Romans seized it early in the first century. Mark Anthony generously gave it to Cleopatra, but it was conquered subsequently by the British and the Turks. Cypress Boy Tells Of Beer Purchases augural, and was a founder and secretary of a swank new club for Republican congressmen here, does not now hold any official party post. He indicated furthermore that Stephenson is not likely to win either party or government appointment in the near future, unless he should emerge wholly in the clear from the current controversy over alleged "influence peddling" in the promotion of sales to the military. Testimony before a House Armored Services Subcommittee showed that Stephenson told a prospective client he had contacts in the Navy and could help him get a bigger share of a pending contract for rocket launchers. He also passed along to the prospect approximate prices bid on the job by several competitors, information that the Navy said was supposed to be secret. His asking price for this help was 4 per cent of sales over the amount the prospect figured to get anyway. Percentage fees of this kind are not illegal. McCarthy Asks Army to Identify Author of Report WASHINGTON (UP)—Sen. Joseph R. McCarthy (R-Wis) today demanded that the Army identify the author of a classified military report on Soviet Siberia which he described as "clear cut Communist propaganda." He said his Senate Permanent Investigating Subcommittee is determined to pin down responsibility for the document, entitled "Psychological and Cultural Traits of Soviet Siberia." Photostatic copies which McCarthy displayed to reporters showed that the report was issued by the military intelligence section of the Far East Command in Tokyo in January, 1952. It was labelled "restricted," a comparatively low order of secrecy classification which means that distribution of the document must be limited to military personnel. A distribution note on the document said 100 copies were printed and sent to 37 top commands in the Far East. A preamble signed by Col. R. S. Bratton said the purpose of the intelligence study was to "develop an understanding of the Soviet people which will be military useful in case of war." It noted that the freedoms which Americans enjoy are repressed in the Soviet Union, but said: "The problem here is not to clans in 800 B.C. and the Romans seized it early in the first century. Mark Anthony generously gave it to Cleopatra, but it was conquered subsequently by the British and the Turks. Cypress Boy Tells Of Beer Purchases A 17-year-old Cypress boy today told a jury in the Municipal Court of Judge John Shea that he purchased beer from a Cypress grocery clerk on six or seven occasions, the last of which landed Marie Jennie Atkinson in jail charged with selling liquor to a minor. The boy was nabbed June 22 by Deputy Sheriff Don Earl as he left the Morning Glory grocery at 9041 Moody St., carrying two cartons of beer. Under questioning of Deputy District Attorney Max Eliason, the tall, blond, curly-headed youth told the jury that on no occasion did Mrs. Atkinson question his age or request identification. Several times during the questioning of the witness, Defense Attorney Lloyd Verry objected to testimony and was overruled by the court. Russell R. Morris of Stanton heard his preliminary hearing on charges of contributing to the deficiency of an 11-year-old girl, set for Sept. 21, when he appeared today in Judge Shea's court for arraignment. A plea of guiltity to reduced charges of petty theft was entered in court today by Thomas Benjamin Lago, 30-year-old trailer park caretaker charged with accepting stolen produce from a local grocery store. Lago had been arrested at his trailer by police Sept. 1 after two boys, one 13 and one 14, were nabbed in the act of removing produce valued at $33 from the West End Alpha Beta Market. A felony charge against the local man was reduced by police which was followed by his plea on the lesser charge. He was given straight probation by the court no tto violate any laws for the next three years. Arraignment of an Orange man, Torrible R. Gusman, 26 on charges of possessing concealed weapons was set forward to Sept. 15, by the court today. Gusman had been arrested at a local dance hall by Anaheim police from a tip by Sheriff's officers. He was carrying two knives and had a loaded German automatic pistol under the front seat of his car when nabbed. Officers asserted Gusman had fired several shots at his estranged wife now living in El Modena a short time before. He is free on ball of $250. It noted that the freedoms which Americans enjoy are repressed in the Soviet Union, but said: "The problem here is not to demonstrate the political injustice and economic tyranny of the Bolshevik government but to illuminate the Russian in his native habitat." The Army said Bratton is now retired and lives in Hawaii. Anaheim Child Injured In Orange Collision ORANGE . Failure to Shop in Silver Bonus Store Costs Woman $162.19 It was a case of poor timing, on the part of Mrs. Cornella Weber, of 915 N. Emily, as she related to the Silver Bonus man, how she had always made it a point to shop every Wednesday at a Silver Bonus Store, and only yesterday, had failed to do so. As a result she failed to qualify for the $162.19 jackpot. Jack Schilling, of Schilling's Shoe Store, had in be content with presenting Mrs. Weber the $5 consolation gift, and reminded her that she must re-register to be eligible for next week's bumper bonus, of $212.19. (UP) — Frightened Springfield mothers kept their children in today while jittery police searched for more snakes which have been identified as deadly poisonous cobras. Five such reptiles have been killed in a neighborhood adjacent to a pet shop. Authorities scared there may be more. Where the snakes came from remained a mystery. Police Chief Frank Pike said all were found within a radius of a few blocks of the pet shop owned by Reo W. Mowrer, who denied any connection with them. "Mowrer," said Pike, "is scared to death. If he knows how many got away he won't tell us." Definitely Identified Pike said that while only five of the reptiles had been identified definitely by Dr. T. M. Parson, head of the biology department Drury College her, it seemed that at least six such had been found and "possible more." The last was killed last after a householder saw it through a crevice in the tails of his home. In a three operation police drove it over gas pipe Pike used a snipped pole to pin down its tile, then shot it three times a pistol. He called on residents of the area to remove from their property any rock, lumber, brush or rubbish piles where the snakes might find cover, also to keep small children in doors. Pike expressed fear that if additional cobras are at large they may survive through the winter "and even breed." While cobras normally do not live in temperatures lower than 50 degrees, he said, experts told him it would be possible of them to hibernate in abistered places. Nearing Completion SANTA ANA — About 1000 feet of ocean outfall remains to be constructed in the sanitation improvement project of Orange County Sanitation District, but the remaining work is in the inshore section which has been hampered by heavy surf it was disclosed today by J. A. Wolley, one of the design engineers of the project. Additional time will be required to cover the submerged pipe with rock, Woolley said, before the work is completed by the Healy-Tibbetts Co. of San Francisco. Meanwhile the Newport Beach, Huntington Beach and Ellis Avenue trunk lines are nearly finished and work has begun on the Buchard Street trunk and the new treatment plant near the mouth of the Santa Ana river. The new treatment plant is not scheduled for completion until next summer, when the $8,300,000 county wide sanitation program will have been achieved. Mr. Eisenhower flew here from his summer White House at Denver and Mr. Truman came by train from Independence, Mo., to salute for the last time the friend and colleague, who had administered the President's oath of office to both of them. President Enters Last The President waited to enter the softly lighted cathedral until members of the family, Mr. and Mrs. Truman, members of the Supreme Court, Cabinet, and diplomatic corps, and scores of judges, congressmen, and members of the bar had taken their seats in specially reserved sections. Then he was escorted to a seat on the front row near the central dals on which rested the mahogany casket with a silver plaque on which was inscribed: "Fred M. Vinson, 1890-1953." President Eisenhower, ceremoniously last to arrive, was first to leave. His government airplane, the Columbine, was waiting at National Airport to take him back to Colorado. "More of Same" Seen As Mercury Hits 93 The weatherman squinted through his glasses at the thermometer, patted his forehead with his handkerchief and said, "well looks like we'll have more of the same today and tomorrow." He was, of course, referring to yesterday's blazing mark of 93 degrees. At 11:30 this morning the mercury had reached the 86 degrees mark and indicated it would reach 93 degrees or go over it. Last night's low was 56 degrees. The humidity reading is almost unchanged. Suiny skies, hot weather and inviting beaches were predicted for tomorrow with some patches of early morning fog along the coast. NO TEARS HERE—It was Martin, '7862 Liberty Ln. in her garden. Thieves entered the Anaheim Auto Glass and Marine and Sports Co., 552-54 South Los Angeles St. during the night and removed guns and ammunition valued at $675.30, police revealed today. Ower Nicholas Joseph Wingert told officers that the thieves entered through a window, by forcing a ventilator and unlatching the window. Although several valuable outboard motors and other sporting equipment was in evidence, only rifles, air guns and Wingert's personal hunting rifle and pistol were taken together with matching ammunition. He was believed the persons responsible for the theft worked in leisurely manner in removing the merchandise. Because of the thoroughness of the burglaries in removing the weapons. The theft was discovered at 8:00 A.M. when Winget arrived to open his place of business. Since all guns stolen are registered weapons, a general police broadcast for their return has been issued. In addition about $40 cash was taken, police said. 40-Year-Resident Dies At Anaheim Home One of Anaheim's old-time residents, Jules DePauw, died this morning at his home at the age of 62.
