ANAHEIM (Cal.) BULLETIN Saturday, September 5, 1953 SMALL TALK In the PATIO by—ROY L. KIRK Labor Day week end will soon be here, and will be a good time to get your planting started. Stocks, snaps, pansies, villas, cineraria, primrose and many other are ready, including many bulbs. However it's a little early for most bulbs as yet. It looks as tho the weather is going to be cool from here on out, maybe a few warm days but you should, by planting now have lots of Xmas bloom. Spray your roses again now. This weather holds the mildew on them. Also feed them again to bring growth and bloom for late fall. For those of you who are interested in lawns, now is a good time to be getting them in. The ground is warm but the weather is cool, and your seed will germinate rapidly with a minimum of water. Also remember this is nature's time to do reseeding. Fuchsias can be pruned back lightly now and fed a little, this cool weather will bring on new growth and also bloom till cold weather. Catholic Chaplain Praised by Freed Prisoners of Reds By FRANK JORDAN INCHON, Korea (UP)—Two repatriated Army doctors, a Protestant and a Jew, joined today in revering the memory of a Roman Catholic chaplain, who gave his life to aid the sick and wounded in a Communist prison acmp. Together they filled in many of the gaps in the story of young, pipe-smoking Father Emil Kapaun of Wichita, Kan., who served priisons of all faiths before he died almost two and one half years ago. Prays With All Capt. Clarence L. Anderson of Long Beach, and Capt. Sidney Esensten of Minneapolis, elaborated on the story of Father Kapaun which has been told before. They told how the 20-year-old priest washed the clothes of the sick, sat up with them and prayed with them—men of all faiths, not just Catholics. Father Kapaun invented excuses to visit men in other compounds and the hospital of the Communist prisoner camp at Pyoktong. He constantly preached the message of hope. Reds Hated Him Anderson and Eisenstein, both 30, said the Communists hated the little chaplain but stopped short of clapping him in solitary confinement. Risking death, Father Kapaun continued to bring the word of God into the miserable life of American prisoners during the bitter winter of 1950-51. "He's more or less a saint...a man — can't think about without a marked feeling of reverence. Intensive training modern techniques of gunning bombing and tactics was conducted. The proficient support of squadron ground crew enabled 783 to complete a very successful training program he said. The retical phase of the training was occupied with classroom study over ocean survival in the station swimming pool. Robert A. Berg, Lt. (jg) South Helena, Anaheim was among the personnel who received intensive training. "Slick" Denies Betrayal Of Comrades to Reds HONOLULU (UP)—"Slick," American war prisoner accused informing on other captives, rived by plane today on his home and denied he betrayed one to the Communists. "Slick" remained aside from other returning former prisoners while newsmen talked with him. He also denied reports that low Americans had threatened him with death. "Slick" said he overstayed leave from a Tokyo hospital one missed "freedom flight."
