(UP)—Air Force officers said today that the pilot whose crew can refuel his jet plane the fastest probably will win the famed Bendix Trophy Race which opens the National Air Show tomorrow. Ten of the best jet pilots in the Air Force will fly their F85F North American Sabre Jets here from Murco Dry Lake in Southern California. And the pilot who spends more than three minutes refueling probably will be out of competition. Elaborate plans have been made for the refueling stops by the five major commands competing for the trophy. Each command has arranged for its planes to stop and to take on about 410 gallons of jet fuel in less than three minutes. The pilots will be seeking to break the Bendix record of 2 hours, 27 minutes, 56.4 seconds posted in 1951 when Col. Keith Compton flew a Sabre jet from California to Detroit at an average speed of 553.761 mph. Los Angeles Fetes 172 Birthday Today LOS ANGELES (UP)—Los Angeles today celebrates its 172nd birthday. City officials and civic leaders will celebrate the occasion at a luncheon at the Biltmore hotel. Speakers will include Mayor Norris Poulson of the Chamber of Commerce. Theme of the commemoration is "The Arts in Los Angeles." This will be carried out by a showing of paintings by contemporary and old masters, music presentations and a series of sketches by the Theater Mart Players.
