Socialists Blast Dulles Backing of Konrad Adenauer
BONN, Germany (UP) — The Socialist opposition charged today the open backing of Chancellor Konrad Adenauer by United States Secretary of State John Foster Dulles was "incredible intervention" in next Sunday's West German elections.
American High Commission officials were upset by the statement. They recalled the furor caused just before the elections in Italy three months ago when U.S. Ambassador Clare Booth Luce made a similar remark.
Adenauer himself tried to take the edge off the situation. The 77-year-old Christian Democrat leader told an election rally in Bonn last night that Dulles, after all, was speaking for and to the American people—not the Germans.
Political observers believed election day was so near the American secretary's statement yesterday at a Washington press conference would have little effect on balloting since voters' minds were already made up.
The Socialists sought to damage the position of the pro-Western Chancellor by plastering posters throughout the country calling the Dulles' statement proof that Adenauer was an "American tool."
The Communists maintained their efforts to hurt Adenauer's chances by resorting to violence in an effort to sabotage the elections.
AIMING FOR LABOR DAY—Hunting rifles are closely inspected these two members of the gun club at Northrop Aircraft's Annal Division in preparation for a hunting expedition when the plant closes down for Labor Day. Robert L. Sadd, 2775 W. St., Santa Ana, left above, looks on while Bert V. Hammett, Ventura, Anaheim, points to the spotless bolt on his weapon. He is leader of the Northrop-Anaheim rifle enthusiasts, most of whom enjoy shooting together in the field or on ranges during lefthours. Hammett, in addition to being an active gun club member, is a gunsmith and turns out both stocks and barrels in spare time. Both men have been with Northrop-Anaheim about one year. Scene of these preparations was Northrop-Adenauer's new recreation clubhouse, center of activity for all of Northrop Recreation Club's employee-participation groups.

SCIENCE and your Health
GUARDING BABY'S EYES by Science Features
New-born babies come into the world with relatively few defenses against disease germs. Modern science has devised a number of procedures to guard against infection during the first days of life, one of the most important of which is the application of silver nitrate to the new-born's eyes.
Routinely applied within a few minutes after birth, silver nitrate has proved extremely effective in reducing the incidence of blindness due to eye infections. Occasionally, however, it also causes irritation to the delicate eye membranes. Recently obstetricians at the Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton, S.D., requested Drs. T. H. Wilcockson and C. D. Cox to determine what could be used to replace silver nitrate. The scientists tested two eye ointments, one containing terramycin alone, and the other this antibiotic in combination with another, polymyxin-B.
They concluded that no difference could be determined in the effectiveness against eye bacteria of the antibiotic ointments vs. silver nitrate. However, they added that nursery personnel "soon prided themselves on being able to dismiss the difference between the two drugs as to the effect on the babies' eyes."
The eyes of the infants treated with silver nitrate, the scientists reported, were reddened and the babies kept their eyes closed for three or four days. But the eyes of the children treated with antibiotic ointments were bright, open and free from irritation.
Grove Candle Firm Gets County Okay
SANTA ANA - Establishment of a candle-manufacturing business in the southwest Garden Grove area was favored as the Orange County Planning Commission made recommendations to the board of supervisors for action next week.
The Glo-Candle Company proposes to set up a candle business and gift shop in an addition to the existing grocery store at the southwest corner of Westminster Ave. and Flower St., with adequate provision for parking space.
Also recommended by the planners for approval were applications of John A. Skogman to erect a commercial building on the north side of Garden Grove Blvd. west of Harbor Blvd.; W. M. Dr. Renner Speaks To Exchange Club
Final chapter in an illustrious medical career spent in the Orient was revealed to members of the Anaheim Exchange Club yesterday by Dr. A. Renner of Corona del Mar.
A Hungarian by birth, Dr. Renner served as a Major in the Austro-Hungarian Army as a surgeon; later being captured and interned by the Russians.
After seven years a prisoner in Siberia, the physician made his escape to China and settled in Shanghai where he become one of the most noted doctors in China. During this time, he served as the personal physician of Chiang Kai Chek and many other notables in China.
During World War II, Dr. and Mrs. Renner underwent many indignities at the hands of the Japanese during the occupation of Shanghai. Following liberation of China by the Allies, the Renners came to the United States for a vacation and were in San Marino at the time Reds took control of China.
Now a citizen of the United States, the veteran doctor told Exchangites yesterday that he was now eligible for his California physician's license and would soon open a sanitarium in Dana Point. This marked the third visit to the local service club this year in which Dr. Renner told of his life in China.
Club Castle Undergoes Remodeling Job
The Club Castle, night club located on the east side of Washington, D.C.
Tommy Kuchel is coming home to Anaheim. This illustrious son of the Mother Colony has enjoyed much the same Horatio Alger rise that Vice-President Nixon has enjoyed.
Beginning as a young attorney, Kuchel turned to politics and soon came before the voters for the post of Assemblyman. From there, it was only a step to the appointment as State Controller.
In this office, he served his fellow Californians well. It was during his years as Controller, (watchdog of the treasury) that the future Senator developed his keen insight into government.
With the election of Richard Nixon to the post of Vice-President, it was the natural choice of Gov. Warren to choose a man as Nixon's successor who had given him more power.
Plans are well under way highway highway engineering route the state highway from the proposed Orangehorse location, to a new route several hundred yards south of the present Orangehorse location. If this completed, it will follow proximately the line of House Ave.
This new road, which probably be a divided four-lane freeway, will form a direct link between the Santa Ana Freeway and Santa Ana Canyon Freeway. It will also provide an access road from Lincoln Ave., providing direct highway service between Long Beach and River Side.
Club Castle Undergoes Remodeling Job
The Club Castle, night club located on the east side of Highway 101 between Anaheim and Santa Ana, is getting a new face along with its new name. It was formerly the Dixie Castle.
Right now the club is undergoing n expensive remodeling program, including a new dance floor and a streamlined interior. However, the club is remaining open for business during the alterations, all work being done during the daytime.
Operator Jack Bell and Al Garey said they are lining up a series of name entertainers in an effort to provide top entertainment for patrons. Currently featured is Scatman Crothers, of Dixie Showboat, Hosgy Carmichael and Donald O'Connor Show fame.
Starting next Tuesday the Pan-tomaniacs will arrive here, following their engagement in Las Vegas, to entertain patrons of the Club Castle.
NO BETTER PLACE
LINCOLN, Nebraska—The manager of a supermarket asked two customers if he could be of any help after watching them load their grocery carts to the brim in an hour-long shopping spree. "Oh, no," replied the two eight-year-old girls. "We're just playing store."

In his first homecoming since joining the upper house of Congress, Kuchel will be able to meet his fellow Orange countians from all walks of life. His appearance in the Greek Theater of Anaheim City Park Sept. 16 will afford those of all political beliefs, the opportunity to meet the man who so well repre-

Planners Reject Business Permits
SANTA ANA - Proposals for a church in Sun Gardens, a restaurant in Garden Grove, a small pasture near Tustin and a trucking business east of Anaheim meet with disapproval as the Orange County Planning Commission recommend denial by the supervisors of the four applications.
Public hearings were conducted for two of the applications, with overwhelming opposition being expressed by petitions and letters. Elmer Herrick had asked permission to establish a restaurant with a seating capacity of 98 persons in an existing dwelling at the northwest corner of Euolid and Chapman Ave., to which adjacent property owners objected.
Four petitions were presented in opposition to proposal or William E. Patterson to maintain a maximum of 20 calves in a five-acre pasture on the easterly side of Newport Ave. south of La Colina Dr.
Plans of the Sun Garden Community Chapel to establish a church on the south side of Central Ave. at the end of Wilson St. were rejected on the opposition of 62 persons, the Garden Grove Chamber of Commerce and the Sun Garden Association. Principal objection appeared based on possibility that the narrow streets might be widened on the church property.
Also in disfavor was the application of Molsi and Son to establish a trucking business for 10 trucks and trailers on nine acres of land at the northeast corner of Placentia Blvd. and La Jolla St., between Anaheim and Placentia. Two residents across the street opposed the application.
Roadblocks Scheduled In Los Angeles County
LOS ANGELES (UP)—The California Highway Patrol will establish highway roadblocks throughout the county tonight in an attempt to cut down the Labor Day week end traffic toll.
The CHP warned it will station "every available man" at the roadblocks to check motorists for possible intoxication and their vehicles for mechanical defects.
The patrol also advised the roadblocked will be shifted to new locations on a secret schedule during the week end.
back to the City of Anaheim on the 15th of September at which traffic regulation will be a function of the city.
This new road, which will probably be a divided four-lane freeway, will form a direct link between the Santa Ana Freeway and Santa Ana Canyon Freeway. It will also provide an access road from Lincoln Ave., thus providing direct highway service between Long Beach and Riverdale.
Best of all, this will entirely eliminate the heavy truck traffic from Center St.
It is estimated that the new Houston freeway can be built some million and one-half dollars cheaper than the widening Orangethrope — a happy thought for the taxpayers.
Center St. will be turned back to the City of Anaheim on the 15th of September at which traffic regulation will be a function of the city.
Anaheimers are wondering if it isn't about time to convene the citizen's committee proposed by the high school board, for the purpose of checking a few text books in the school preparatory to the fall term.
