Stanley Tomlinson, who captured both Republican and Democratic nominations in the primary, is opposed by Dave Patton, candidate for the Independent Progressive Party. State Sen. Clarence C. Ward, who also captured both Republican and Democratic nominations, is unopposed. In the 11th Congressional contest, Rep. Ernest K. Barmblett, who won both Republican and Democratic nominations, is opposed by Cole Weston of the IPP. VALLEY VOTERS WILL CAST SHORT BALLOT IMPERIAL, Oct. 30—Imperial County voters next Tuesday will cast ballots containing not a single local issue. All contests for local offices, including also representative for the 22nd Congressional district, were decided in the primary election. Rep. John Phillips, Republican, was automatically re-elected in the district comprising Riverside, Imperial and Orange Counties, in the primary. Ben Hulse of El Centro, State Senator, and George R. Butters of Brawley, 77th District Assemblyman, both Republicans, were re-elected without opposition in the primary. The primary was final for all local offices. State Assemblyman R. Fred Price of Ontario is expected to find little opposition from Arthur P. Townsend, Independent-Progressive for the 72nd District post. The voters also will decide whether Stanley W. Mussell of San Bernardino will be elected as Associate Justice of the Fourth District Court of Appeal. He was recently appointed to the position. Stores, business houses, banks—in fact, the entire community—were represented in group contests for costume prizes. Mr. and Mrs. Ted Bottger, attired as Uncle Sam and Miss Liberty, won a sweepstakes award as the best costumed couple. Mayor Charles Pearson and his wife presided. Members of civic clubs prepared and served the breakfast, one of the oldest Southern California Halloween festivities to place merrymaking on a community basis. Supervisors Top Interest VISALIA, Oct. 30—Tulare County interest in the general election, on the local level, centers in the 1st and 3rd supervisorial districts, and in the 36th Assembly District which includes both Tulare and Kings counties. Robert W. Bennett, Porterville farmer, is Republican candidate for the 36th Assembly District, opposing Harlan Hagen, Hanford attorney. Charles Young, 1st District supervisor running for his second term, is opposed to Roger Moore, former county school official. Supervisor Roscoe L. Patterson, Visalia, 3rd District supervisor, is running for his fifth term against James H. Young, Ivanhoe citrus rancher. Merry Makers Hurt in Hay Wagon Spill PALM SPRINGS, Oct. 30—a hay wagon carrying 35 merry-makers en route to a western breakfast got out of control this morning when the hitch broke and careened down a steep hill, throwing its passengers right and left. The wagon broke loose from the team hauling it and rolled backward down the hill near the Casitas Del Monte Hotel. H. F. Dobeck, 55, Glendale, and Harvey S. Gerwein, Portland, Dr., both suffered fractures. Eight others were treated for minor injuries at the hospital. Three Local Issues Face Fresno Voters FRESNO, Oct. 30—A hotly contested Congressional race, a contest for a State Assembly seat and a County Charter amendment proposal are the local issues which voters will decide Tuesday. In the Congressional race, veteran Rep. B. W. Gearhart, Fresno Republican, is opposed by Cecil White, a Democrat and west side cotton grower. Gearhart, who has served seven terms in the House, is a member of the Ways and Means Committee. Josephine Daniels of Madera is the IPP candidate. Another veteran, Assemblyman S. L. Heisinger of the 35th, rural Fresno County district, is opposed by Republican William Hanson, dairyman who has been active in Farm Bureau work. The Charter change proposal would permit the County Board of Supervisors to combine any two or more county elective offices. Festivities continued throughout the day, concluding with a two-mile-long parade tonight in which 30 bands and 500 horsemen participated.
